Review and Acceptance of Minutes
Minutes from last meeting as well as minutes from this meeting will be accepted at February 4th meeting.
SCHOOL LOCATION STATUS:
Claudio Bazzano, Executive Director of Facilities spoke to the SGC members about a location that seems viable for the 2016-2017 school year. He stressed that they have looked at all and any available sites in Hartford and found that nothing was available or suited to be used as a Montessori School. The site that is currently being looked at is in West Hartford on the campus for the American School for the Deaf. After reviewing the property, it was decided that it could be renovated to meet Montessori Standards. As of now, next year, we will continue to occupy the two current locations with some added space at McDonough to meet the growing student population. Mr. Bazzano explained that there would be multiple meetings to approve the sale of the building to the City of Hartford, as well as board of education approval. A timeline was shared verbally. As meetings occur and information comes out, our school community will get more details/ updates. SGC came to consensus that sharing of this information at this time would not be prudent per advice given that the property could be lost to another bidder. Timeline to share with community would be following the 1/6/15 BOE Workshop Meeting, when made ‘public’, and before the 1/20/15 BOE meeting to allow for discussion.
Currently we have 205 students at both campuses. The Projected enrollment for the 2015-2016 school year is between 253-259 students.
New Family Recruitment:
We are currently busy conducting tours and reaching out to families within and around the greater Hartford area. Families are being encouraged to see Montessori Education in Action.
TITLE 1 Funds for Parent Training:
An email from Jennifer Shannon stated that the amount of money we had available in Title 1 funds was, $509.00, not the amount previously thought. After some discussion on how to spend the funds to help our parents understand our program, it was decided that the monies would be best spend on offering a “Silent Journey†workshop to our parents. It is thought that the more parents understand the Montessori Philosophy the more they will be able to support their child in school and at home. The SGC felt that this would be a better way to support our families rather than using the money for Hartford Parent University.
No Child Held Back:
NCHB has to be decided at the district level not the school level, therefore, Montessori Magnet will not be participating in NCHB at this time. It should also be noted that MM is already doing many of the strategies that define what NCHB is about.
Participate in ‘Meeting Close’ process: Members talked about how much their honesty was appreciated and how well the SGC team works to support each other.
NEXT SGC Meeting is set for February 4th at 5:30pm
