Nancy Mendez welcomed everyone. The following members were present: Lauren Akerlind, Maureen Andrews, Rosana Bannock, Jaqueline Cossentino (via phone conference call), Christy D’Aquila, Joe Gonzalez, Carolyn Havrda, Cynthia Kehoe, Dee Dee Kielbasa-Desmarais, Nancy Mendez, Mary Matos, Victor Paul (via phone conference call), Jennifer Shannon, and Ruth Tracy
2. Ground Rules
SGC members took turns reading the SGC Ground Rules.
3. Welcome new parent representative-Annette Santana/training manual
Our newest member, Annette Santana, was welcomed to the committee. Annette Santana and
Mary Matos received their training manuals.
4. Identify minute recorder and time keeper
Ruth Tracy volunteered to keep time and Maureen Andrews agreed to record the minutes. Minute
taker section of the training manual was reviewed for clarification.
5. Coordinate sign-up/RSVP for Saturday, December 5th Building Friendly Family Schools Together
Saturday 12/5 from 8:30-12:00. Carolyn, Nancy, Rosie, and Mary (and additional OPMAD staff) will
be attending. Invite was sent to the whole school.
6. Review of SGC training grid and budget training
Members reviewed and initialed by the trainings that they have attended. Montessori Magnet had the highest number of participants at the last training held in October. 11. The next training for the budget held on Dec 3rd and 10th.
7. Overview/update of school location status/information/action steps
We are moving forward with the Franklin Avenue property. Hopefully, contract will be signed this month. There is concern about the timeline and not having met with an architect yet. The SGC needs to do a walk-through of the building and request input for suggestions about what we want/need done to make this building a Montessori school. We are moving forward but there needs to be a push for this.
Ideas for gathering suggestions from the school community:
• Provide an overview (from Jackie Cossentino of Montessori in Public Sector) of a generalized Montessori
school.
• Presentation of pictures and/or videos of the new location, possibly at the December 16th MMCO meeting
• Upload these pictures on our website as well.
• Set up visits to Annie Fisher Montessori and possibly CREC Montessori to see actual schools.
Have upper elementary students what they think we need. Rosie would take charge of this task
Post the 11/30 meeting it was learned from the HPS Facilities Department that a sales agreement will not be set this month and we will not be able to tour/take pictures of the property before the winter break. The 12/16 MMCO meeting seeking suggestions will be cancelled.
8. Analyze School Implementation Plan (SIP) data
Members broke off into pairs to review the data and then shared whole group.
Noticings: Absenteeism is mostly in the PK3 and PK4 age groups, 3rd grade did well across the board, math data is low overall
Next steps: students are beginning to use Dreambox program at home, iReady math diagnostic for those still not meeting benchmarks will be administered, SRBI intervention groups to give students extra support will be communicated during conferences, BE KIND program needs to be developed with students leading the building of this program to build off of grace and courtesies.
Question posed: Can the math data be broken down by gender? Yes.
9. Overview School Compact Training and set plan for updating
Sub-committee to launch publicity of compact and get input from staff and parents, could add in some student input including BE KIND, possibly bring someone in to help us and simplify the process. (Judy Carson, Ann Henderson), engage students in ownership possibly by having them contribute to the cover of the compact. Ruth, Rosie, Maureen, Annette, Jennifer and Nancy volunteered to meet in a sub-committee and Nancy volunteered to spearhead making contact. Add the compact to the MMCO’s January 25th meeting agenda. Also, hold an information session in Spanish.
10. Set interview plan for Dean of Students candidates
7 candidates were interviewed (20 minutes each) and 4 candidates will move forward to a 2nd interview. The role of Dean of Students was reviewed. Members broke out into small groups to discuss each of the 4 candidate’s resume in more detail. Next steps were decided for selection process and include: The 2nd interview panel will include 6-8 people including staff, parents, and principal with an equal number of staff and parents represented. Insure the full interview panel understands the role and responsibilities of a Dean of Students. Interviews will be scheduled for Dec 4th, 2015. The panel will then narrow it down to 2 candidates. A ‘Meet the Candidate’ session will be held (similar to the session held in the spring when new guides were hired). This will be held Friday, December 11th from 1:30-2:30 with discussion/input form from 2:30-3:00. Parent feedback is important to the process.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:24pm.
The next SGC Meeting is Monday, February 4, 2016. The Next SGC Training, Student-Based Budget Process, is December 3rd at Annie Fisher Stem Magnet or December 10th at Journalism and Media Academy Magnet School.
