Second Annual Transition Fair Continues Pathways’ Leadership in Serving Special Education Students

Pathways Academy of Technology and Design, is proud to be a district leader in serving students with Special Education needs. Our Special Education Department does an incredible job of supporting our very wide variety of special education students — including some students who are very advanced academically and serve as leaders of our school and others who are challenged in different ways.

As an example of this department’s great leadership this year Pathways sponsored
our Second Annual Transition Expo on October, 22, 2015. Twenty-eight families participated in the event, which attracted a number of families from other schools. Information was provided about services available for students when they transition from high school to adult life. Pathways invited representatives from thirteen agencies, organizations and adult service providers. A representative from Goodwin College was also on hand to speak with families about resources for college students with disabilities. Since independent living is an important component of adult life, the staff at Pathways invited The Kennedy Center Travel Training program, as well as The Greater Hartford Transit District. Staff members from Easter Seals and HARC discussed the services that they provide which may help support employment, independent living, community participation and self-advocacy. Finally, a representative from SERC was invited to share information on research and best practices for family members and educators.

Family members asked questions about their child’s future regarding post-secondary education, employment, independent living, community participation and self-advocacy.

Congratulations to the Special Education staff including, Ms. Mullady, Ms. diCorica,
Ms. Gustavson, Ms. Michaelson and Ms. Davis for their excellent work!
