SMSA Students Keep on Giving

The students at the Sport and Medical Sciences Academy are helping to support those in need in the capital city. The students of Mr. McKay’s Urban Studies class along with Capstone student Josh Dorsey, handed out hats for the homeless Saturday morning on January 11th at South Church in Hartford.

After Josh’s first visit to South Church, he described the experience as extremely uplifting, leaving him with the feeling of wanting to do more. Many of the patrons were looking for hats in addition to the socks and coats our students were handing out. That is why the students of SMSA, after their November visit, wanted to come back and hand out the much needed hats for the homeless in Hartford.

Special thanks to Mr. McKay and his students, as well as Minela Guster who has been serving breakfast at South Church, most Saturday mornings since October. Stay tuned: Minela is hoping to coordinate a breakfast hosted by the senior class, and an event where the SMSA staff and students serve breakfast at South Church. I am extremely proud of our students, and continue to be inspired by their generosity and character.
