Sport and Medical Sciences Academy Students Honor Roberto Clemente in Capstone Project

On December 31st, 2014 city leaders, community members, the Boy Scouts, the Hartford Explorers, and three Sport and Medical Sciences Academy seniors, came together to honor the life of Roberto Clemente.  The ceremony was the 3rd annual commemoration event coordinated by the Roberto Clemente Life Commemoration Committee, which this year included three SMSA seniors, Pichtida Chhean, Jonathan Gegestkas, and Alex Wales.  The three seniors, along with their mentor and Sport and Medical Sciences teacher, Alex Mercado, met weekly for several weeks to plan the special event, which is a part of their senior capstone project.  The Commemoration honored the life of Roberto Clemente and highlighted not only his baseball career and talents, but his deep commitment to service.

State Representative Angel Arce recognized the students for their contributions to the Commemoration Event of Roberto Clemente, and encouraged the audience to give our youth more responsibility.   State Representative Arce also gave special recognition to Pichtida Chhean’s capstone project, which is to collect gently used sporting equipment to donate to Hartford’s youth. Our seniors made a commitment, were given responsibilities and followed through in order to be a part of a wonderful event, honoring an inspirational athlete and humanitarian.  Thank you SMSA seniors for representing your school, and honoring the legacy of Roberto Clemente.

“Any time you have an opportunity to make a difference in this world and you don’t, then you are wasting your time on earth.” Roberto Clemente
