Statement from the Superintendent: The Tragic Death of Tyre Nichols
I care deeply about our students, staff, and families. The videos and images showing the savage beating of Tyre Nichols at the hands of five police officers are agonizing. These images yet again are a piercing reminder of our country’s unhealed wounds and our continued struggle for racial and social justice. They are a stark visual representation of the injustices faced by members of our Black, Indigenous, and other communities of color, who have been largely marginalized and devalued in our society. My heart is with the Nichols family and all who have been impacted by this horrific tragedy.
At Hartford Public Schools, we vehemently and unequivocally condemn the killing of Tyre Nichols. We remain committed to ensuring all our students, especially those from our most marginalized communities, have the support, resources, and access to the success they all deserve. Moments like this only reaffirm how crucial that mission is, as well as how much work remains to be done, as we strive to advance racial equity, inclusion and justice.
We acknowledge that our students, families, and staff will experience a variety of feelings including vulnerability, sadness, anger, fear, confusion, outrage, and even outright emotional fatigue at having to comprehend yet another unjustifiable death of a young black man. We will be sure to provide outlets, restorative circles, and listening spaces for all who need to express themselves, grieve, and heal. Social Workers and Counselors will be available for anyone who needs support. We will also provide teachers and staff with resources to engage in age-appropriate conversations with students.

We will respond by providing culturally responsive, highly effective teaching, and by building the positive and personal relationships our students need to feel valued, supported, and loved. The diversity of Hartford Public Schools is our strength and we know that together we can continue to create a community with a foundation in equity, inclusion, and justice.
