Two photographers from the Journalism & Media Academy Magnet School have been recognized in the 2014 Connecticut Scholastic Art Awards Show and will present their winning photographs later this month at the University of Hartford.

Senior Laymu Htaw earned a silver award for his photograph “Braindance,” a deep self-reflective piece.   Senior Mahleik Crawford earned a Honorable Mention for his stunning photograph of classmate Arianna Vernon entitled” The Power of Elegance.”

Crawford said just four short years ago he was unsure of his skills.

“When I first came to JMA I didn’t think taking pictures and learning Adobe Photoshop would be of use,” he said.  “Now, in my senior year I can see using these skills with my career choices.”

JMA teacher Donna Frustere advised the students and entered their work into the competition.

“Having entered this competition prior years and having juried many myself, I realized that we had a strong chance of winning,” Frustere said.   “When we began our self portrait digital projects in October, I was delighted to see many strong, rich results from our students. Their work was truly of high quality.”

Frustere said in total, four photographs from JMA students were entered into the competition.

“I feel like…unbelievable…it is my first time winning,” Htaw said.  “I appreciate my art teacher for taking the time for me.  I am so proud of myself.”

Stephen Sackett, a sophomore at Pathways Academy of Technology and Design will also be receiving a Scholastic Art and Writing State recognition award at the ceremony at Hartford Art School, on January 26th.
