Superintendent’s Message October 2013
Spotlight on Excellence: Superintendent’s Message, October 2013
Autumn is suddenly back again, bringing chilly mornings, warm sweaters, brightly colored leaves and pumpkins at the supermarket. Our Hartford Public Schools students have been back in class for over a month working hard and engaged in learning.
October is College and Career Readiness Awareness Month in Hartford. It is our duty to prepare our students for what awaits them as adults, and a college diploma is a tremendous advantage in today’s job market. It is our mission to ensure that all of our students are prepared to compete and succeed in the global economy. This month brings us fantastic news from our high schools about five HPHS students attending the World Summit of Nobel Peace Prize Laureates in Poland, four Hartford Public Schools participating in Model United Nations (more schools than any other school district!), and our Academy of Engineering & Green Technology providing wind power to a village in Nepal.
Our Strategic Operating Plan is structured so that our three main goals — Third Grade Promise, Middle Years Redesign, and College Readiness — lead to the overarching goal of College and Career Success. This year we kicked off the month with a panel presentation to a selection of our high school students advising them about how to think about and act upon preparing their personal paths to college and career. Read more about our exciting collegiate plans for October, here.
Autumn also brings us election season – a time to responsibly research your options for representation at the city, state, and school level. This year four candidates are vying to represent you on our Board of Education. Though I continue to work hard and serve you all with complete dedication as your Superintendent of Schools until June of 2014, I remind you that the Board members you elect next month will be helping to select your new Superintendent. You can find out more about the candidates for the Board of Education at Achieve Hartford!’s DoMoreThanHope website Above all, remember to vote on November 5th .
School Fair season is also here again, kicking off on November 16th. School Fairs are the first stop along the path of exploring the excellent school options here in Hartford; schools serving students from PreKindergarten age 3 through Grade 12 are represented. At the School Fairs you can talk to staff from the schools you are interested in, obtain answers to questions and learn more about the various themes and programs that each school provides. You can pick-up an open house schedule or set a time to have your child “shadow” a student to observe a typical school day. Each School Fair will also have computers and staff available to assist you with completing applications. Whatever your child’s dreams or interests, you can find a school to match them here in the Hartford Public Schools. Find out more about the School Fairs here.
