Superintendent’s Message: Celebrating Black History Month
Dear Families, Colleagues, Partners, and Friends,
Monday is the start of Black History Month, the annual celebration of achievements of African Americans and their essential role in our history. The theme this year is “The Black Family: Representation, Identity, and Diversity”. At Hartford Public Schools, we honor the contributions of Black Americans through culturally relevant teaching, learning, and activities in our schools for the benefit of all our students, teachers, and staff.
While February is the month we celebrate, we know that Black History is much more than a once-per-year event. For HPS, commemorating Black History is a critical part of our mission to provide equitable access to education throughout our district. Twenty-nine percent of our students identify as Black or African American, and Black people represent the second largest racial or ethnic group in Hartford, with a long and rich history in our city and region.
As educators, and as members of the Hartford community, HPS is committed to highlighting Black History respectfully and accurately. We are also dedicated to building a School Culture and Climate that supports our Black students and staff, ensuring they feel valued and connected.
We will gather and share stories from across our district about how our students, from all backgrounds, plan to elevate Black history and culture. Please check our district website (www.hartfordschools.org) for stories and read our weekly newsletter for updates.
Please join us this month as we celebrate the countless Black individuals who have given their gifts and their lives in pursuit of a society that is free, just, and equitable for all.

Celebrando el Mes de la Historia Negra
Estimada familia, colegas, socios(as) y amistades,
El lunes es el comienzo del Mes de la Historia Negra, la celebración anual de logros de afroamericanos(as) y su rol esencial en nuestra historia. El tema de este año es “La familia negra: Representación, identidad y diversidad”. En Escuelas Públicas de Hartford, honramos las contribuciones de estadounidenses negros(as) por medio de ensenanza, aprendizaje y actividades culturalmente relevantes en nuestras escuelas para el beneficio de todos(as) nuestros(as) estudiantes, maestros(as) y personal.
Mientras que febrero es el mes en que celebramos, sabemos que la historia negra es mucho más que un evento de una vez al año. Para HPS, conmemorar la historia negra es una parte crucial de nuestra misión de proveer acceso equitativo a educación en todo nuestro distrito. Veintinueve porciento de nuestros(as) estudiantes se identifican como negros(as) o afroamericanos(as) y la gente negra representan el segundo grupo racial o etnico mas grande en Hartford, con una historia larga y rica en nuestra ciudad y region.
Como educadores(as), y miembros de la comunidad de Hartford, HPS está comprometido a resaltar la historia negra de manera respetuosa y precisa. También estamos dedicados(as) a construir una cultura y ambiente escolar que apoye a nuestros(as) estudiantes y empleados(as) negros(as), asegurando que se sientan valorados(as) y conectados(as).
