THE ARTS: The 5th Annual Hartford Creative Contest

This is the 5th year of offering Hartford Creative Contest to the resident students of Hartford and those children from outside of Hartford who attend Hartford schools.  It is open to students in grades 4 – 12.  There have been wonderful entries in past years and we know this year will also result in many excellent submissions.

Open to all Hartford residents grades 4 – 12, as well as non-Hartford residents attending Hartford schools

To encourage a wide variety of responses, contest participants are invited to choose one of two topics.

This year’s topics are:
1. What would make my neighborhood or school better?
2. If I were a police officer, I’d …

Accepted submissions can be in the form of an essay, poem, or artwork. All entries must relate directly to one of the above topics and follow these guidelines:

Essays
Must be TYPED on standard 8.5 X 11” paper
Must be a minimum of 400 words and must not exceed 1,200 words
Poetry
Must be TYPED on standard 8.5 X 11” paper
Must not exceed 2 pages
Visual Art
Must be on paper or canvas no larger than 18 X 24”
ALL ARTWORK must be accompanied by a short statement from the artist
connecting the work to the topic chosen.

ALL SUBMISSIONS MUST BE ENTRANT’S ORIGINAL WORK, NOT PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED.

Each submission is due by 5:00 pm, Friday, March 6, 2020, and MUST INCLUDE:

The Student’s name, age, grade, school, teacher’s name, complete home
address and phone number.

All work will be evaluated based on content, creativity and originality.

Entries in each category of essays, poetry and artwork will be divided into 3
grade-based sub-categories: grades 4 – 6, 7 – 9, and 10 – 12.

There will be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place awards given in each category.

The Award Ceremony is open to winners and two guests on Saturday, May 2,
2020, at Asylum Hill Congregational Church, 814 Asylum Ave., Hartford, CT.
