The New Capital Community College Academy: A High School Where College Courses Are A Must

The New Capital Community College Academy:  A High School Where College Courses Are A Must

(Wednesday, February 5, 2014) Hartford Public Schools, in partnership with Capital Community College, will open a new magnet school this fall, in which students earn their high school diploma and complete credits for an associate college degree at the same time — free of charge.

Located in the Capital Community College building at 950 Main Street in Hartford, the Capital Community College Academy is designed for 11th and 12th graders only. The academy aligns student schedules so that they can be totally immersed in college course work as they finish high school. Commitment to a rigorous curriculum is a must.

“I am thrilled that we have been able to add The Capital Community College Academy to our growing set of early college choice options,” said Hartford Superintendent Christina M. Kishimoto. “These schools bridge the gap between secondary and post secondary education by immersing high school students in the college community and providing access to college course work.”

Among the other Hartford schools on college campuses are University High School of Science and Engineering (University of Hartford), Great Path Academy (Manchester Community College) and the Hartford Magnet Trinity College Academy. A fifth high school, the Pathways Academy of Technology and Design, is expected to open later this year on the campus of Goodwin College in East Hartford.

“We recognize and value the importance of engaging and connecting with students early on in their academic careers to ensure success and are pleased to partner with Hartford Public Schools in the establishment of this new magnet school,” said Capital Community College President Wilfredo Nieves.”

Students of the academy will have access to all Capital Community College facilities, such as tutorial programs, technology, laboratories, and gymnasiums. The academy will also provide students with all of the academic, career, college and personal counseling services that they will need to enhance their learning experience, including one-on-one mentors.

More significantly, the academy’s partnerships with Downtown Hartford business, cultural and historic institutions will give students access to internship positions in their fields of interest.

Classes for student of the academy will be small, but class time will be lengthened to allow for the in-depth exploration of topics and sustained learning that one would find on a college campus.

Capital Community College invites parents and students who would like more information to attend an open house on Wednesday, February 19, 2014, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in Room 206 of the college at 950 Main Street in Hartford.
