Toward Reducing Chronic Absenteeism HPS Health Services Partners with CCMC to Support Families with Asthma

Building Bridges is an asthma program at S.A.N.D. School that is a cooperative effort between our nurses and Connecticut Children's Medical Center. The goal is to reduce absenteeism for children with asthma by teaching parents/children how to manage their asthma better. This program started last year in three schools and this year it is in ten of our schools. The CCMC asthma educator comes into the schools and works with families (after obtaining parental consent) and their primary care providers to ensure that children have good asthma management and do not miss school because of poor asthma control.

The ten schools participating in the Building Bridges Program this school year are:

Martin Luther King
SAND School
Thirman L. Milner School
Simpson-Waverly
Latino Studeies Academy at Burns School
R.J. Kinsella Magnet School of the Performing Arts
Kennelly School
Moylan School
Naylor School
Burr School
