Two Passionate and Dedicated Guests Speakers Inspire Students at HMTCA

Guest Speaker, Laura Spero

Two guest speakers visited the HMTCA high school campus bringing with them passion and dedication. The first speaker, Laura Spero, shared her experiences living in a remote village in Nepal. She described her desire to learn about new places and meet new people after graduating from Williams College. Laura’s sense of adventure led her to develop an amazing relationship with people who live a completely different lifestyle half way around the world. The needs and suffering of the people Laura met inspired her to start her own non-governmental organization (NGO) called Eva Nepal. The organization strives to provide dental care and educational opportunities for people with very limited resources. High school students in Ms. Avery’s human rights class were overwhelmingly inspired by Laura’s passion and dedication.

Guest Speaker, John Humphries

Shortly after Laura’s visit, the class was treated to another guest speaker, John Humphries. John, also known as CJ’s Dad, talked about his work with the National Religious Campaign Against Torture (NRCAT). Students explored this challenging topic by examining the U.S. treatment of prisoners in Guantanamo Bay.  Two students in the class acted out a short skit juxtaposing the emotional and physical pain of torture with the legal description. The powerful performance along with John’s expertise made for a highly memorable experience. Students, once again, were impressed as John shared his passion and dedication to a worthy cause.
