Distance Learning

What is Distance Learning?

Distance learning is the education of students who are not physically present at a school. Teachers will deliver lessons and learning materials in a number of ways, using the Internet, videos, discussion forums, worksheets, and other tools.

We have been working diligently on our distance learning model for students in grades K-12, the Continuity of Learning Plan (CLP), which  includes opportunities for E-Learning and technology-free learning.

  • E-Learning: learning that involves utilizing digital devices, such as Chromebooks, laptops, or even cell phones, to access educational curriculum outside of a traditional classroom
  • Technology-free learning: learning via non-digital resources, such as district-provided printed learning packets, to access educational curriculum outside of a traditional classroom

What does this mean for my child?

As part of the CLP, your child will have access to grade-level activities and materials that offer a combination of review, practice, and new learning. While the CLP is a new way of learning for many of our students, we will do our best to provide support.

Student Technology

Devices Distribution

Please note: If you already have a laptop, ipad or electronic device at home, you can access distance learning from the student’s HPS Google account.

We are doing our best to provide a device to every family that does not have one. If you still need a device and do not already have a scheduled appointment, contact the Welcome Center at your earliest convenience. They can be reached Monday – Friday from 8:00 AM to 4 PM at 860-695-8400

Tech-Free Learning

Technology-free learning is learning via non-digital resources, such as district-provided printed learning packets, to access educational curriculum outside of a traditional classroom.  We strongly encourage students to use E-learning and we are committed to supporting this transition for our students. However, if you do not have a device, internet access, or if you would prefer a technology-free option with printed learning materials, please contact your child’s teacher directly.

On April 6, the district began mailing tech-free printed materials and resources to PreK and K-5 families. Teachers will provide tech-free lessons for all students identified as participating in this option.

The Coronavirus, referred to as COVID-19, is a viral illness that originated in Wuhan City, China, and is currently considered a pandemic affecting a growing number of people worldwide. COVID-19 can affect your lungs and airways. Common symptoms include cough, fever, and shortness of breath.

The virus  is thought to spread between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet) and through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes.  The CDC recommends practicing social distancing as a way to reduce the spread of COVID-19. This means reducing close contact with people and standing at least 6 feet away from others when out in public.

There is currently  no specific treatment for coronavirus (COVID-19).Treatment aims to relieve the symptoms until you recover.

Preventative Health Measures

The best way to prevent the spread of viral illness like COVID-19 or the flu is by using simple good health practices. We strongly encourage all members of your family to do the following:

  • Practicing social distancing (Reducing close contact with and standing at least 6 feet away from others while in public)
  • Wash your hands frequently for at least 20 seconds with soap and water
  • Use hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing and then throw the tissue in the trash
  • Wipe down frequently touched or shared surfaces (such as doorknobs, tables, counters, faucets, etc.) after each use with a disinfectant wipe.
  • Avoid sharing cups, utensils, water bottles, etc.
  • If your child has a fever, do not send him/her back to school until fever free for 24 hours (without the use of Tylenol/Ibuprofen)
