Hartford Public Schools stepped up for the community with their United Way Community Campaign.  The Middle Grades Academyat West Middle School led the way with the highest percentage of participation with the support from staff and faculty lead by Lynn Estey, Principal.  With enthusiasm and commitment West Middle staff posted outstanding results.  We thank them for their leadership and congratulate them on their excellent results.

The support of the United Way from our HPS district employees has been amazing. Our commitment to our local community helped us reach a participation of 142 employees, raising a total of $19,759.80!!! That’s $3,095.80 more than last year. Congratulations, everyone!

Ms. Estey, faculty, staff and students were presented with the official 2013 United Way Campaign trophy from United Way President and CEO Susan Dunn and Mechelle Tovar Olórtegui, the Donor Relations Manager.  Launched in 2012, the friendly competition will generate excitement each year, as the school with the highest participation will receive their very own award.  Who will win it in 2014?

The United Way Community Campaign, a joint effort of United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut and Community Health Charities of New England. United Way is a dynamic, year-round movement focused on advancing the common good in our communities. We have the unique ability, vision and resources to bring together diverse stakeholders around a community vision of creating positive change to achieve long-lasting results. United Way Community Investment—the choice for positive change — is the giving option focused on advancing the common good. Our community priorities to advance the common good are:
  • Education: Children enter school ready to learn and students succeed academically.
  • Income: Families become financially stable.
  • Health: Our Community is healthy.
  • Safety Net: Our basic needs are met.
As we close out the 2013 campaign, planning for 2014 will start soon.   We would like to hear your comments or suggestions about the campaign.  We are also looking to find a new principal who would be interested in chairing the campaign for 2014.  So send any interest emails to Yukie Li, YukShan.Li@hartfordschools.org.

Last year we highlighted a personal United Way story from a teacher. If you have a positive, inspiring story, please share it with us and it will be highlighted in Spotlight on Excellence.
