University High School Teacher Theresa Vara-Dannen Honored for Excellence

 
Theresa Vara-Dannen, a history teacher at University High School of Science and Engineering and the reigning Connecticut History Teacher of the Year, has picked up another honor.
 
Ms. Vara-Dannen has been awarded the University of Connecticut Early College Experience Instructor Award for Excellence for her work in teaching UConn English and American Studies courses. Only three adjunct faculty members are selected for this distinction.
 
UConn’s Early College Experience program is a concurrent enrollment program that allows motivated high school students to take UConn courses at their high schools for both high school and college credit.  There are currently 130 students from UHSSE enrolled in UConn ECE courses.  
 
An evening of recognizing outstanding instruction and administration, along with celebrating a successful year of UConn ECE will be held on Tuesday, May 14, 2013 from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. at the Alumni Center, UConn Storrs Campus.  Family, friends and colleagues are invited to attend this celebration of excellence in education.
 
Theresa Vara-Dannen is a graduate of New York Law School (J.D.), Wesleyan University (C.A.S), and Swansea University, Wales (Ph.D.).
 
Adjunct faculty member of the University of Connecticut and the University of Hartford, she teaches English and American Studies at University High School in Hartford, Connecticut. She works closely with the Oxford University Press Editors of the African-American National Biography in promoting primary document research projects among her Hartford students. She was recently named 2012 Connecticut History Teacher of the Year by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.
 
Her book of poetry, Profligate with Love, was published in 2006 by Antrim House and The History of the United Church of Christ, Southbury, Connecticut  was published in 2003.
