Bulkeley CASC Trip

Written by David Lopez, Bulkeley High School Student

On Friday, March 8, 2024, Bulkeley students went on a trip to Woodbridge Regional High School for the annual Connecticut Association Student Councils (CASC) convention. Our Bulkeley group was the first to arrive and they were greeted with cheers and a band playing music. Our group took part in listening to Lasada Pippen talking about leadership.

In there they talked about new amendments and elected new people to take positions that were available. While the others were in the auditorium taking part in the special program, the presenters, Secretary of State Stephanie Thomas, State Treasurer Erick Russell, Comptroller Sean Scanlon, and Attorney General Tong, talked about their positions and what they do for Hartford. They also talked about the programs that are being planned for teenagers who turn 18.

Schools were divided into districts, the North District, the South District, the West District, and the East District. Bulkeley is part of the north district, which is represented by the purple flag, and they took part in multiple games-- where our district won!

Each student went to their different breakout sessions in classrooms on the second floor of the school. Once the sessions were finished, students headed to a different room to meet with their district. After this, students returned to the gymnasium for the service project where students did different things like making cards for hospitalized children, blankets for babies, and donating cereal boxes. Next, everyone headed back towards the auditorium for the election and closing statements. Schools nominated different people from their schools. Bulkeley nominated Tosh Brown. Once all nominees were chosen each one gave a speech.

In an election with 7 nominees, from 13 schools and 181 students, Tosh Brown gave an excellent improvised speech with absolute confidence. After all votes were counted, the results came in and Tosh Brown won the election for Secretary Treasurer of the CT State Student Council.
