On October 20, the Hartford Public Library and Read to Grow teamed up to host a compelling panel discussion focused on the powerful documentary film, The Right to Read. State and local leaders shared their thoughts with special guest Kareem Weaver, co-founder and Executive Director of Fulcrum, on the critical importance of reading and adopting science-based literacy instruction.
Also on the panel was Hartford Public Schools Deputy Superintendent of Schools and Academic Excellence Dr. Kondra Rattley, and Hartford Public High School Teacher, Kaitlin Marinelli. They were joined by CT State Representative Jennifer Leeper, and CT State Director of Literacy Research and Reading Success Melissa Hickey. The panel was facilitated by Read to Grow Executive Director Suzannah Holsenbeck. Also present from HPS were Dwight-Bellizzi Tecaher Janelle Marrero, Assistant Director of Elementary Teaching & Learning Amanda Kushner, Assistant Director of Multi-tired Systems of Support Erin Doyle, Sanchez School Principal Evelyn Mendoza-Overton, and more! Milly Arcieniegas, the President of Hartford Parent University and literacy champion, and Hartford Board of Education Vice-Chairperson Francoise Deristel-Leger also attended.
