Dear Students, Families, Staff, Partners, and Friends,
I would like to express my gratitude to everyone in our Hartford Public Schools’ community. I see the good work you do in support of our schools all year long, and it is deeply appreciated. Our students, families, teachers, staff, and partners inspire me each day. Together, I see us moving forward to raise the bar for all our students. We have all been working so hard, and I wish a restful, peaceful break for you all. And, I look forward to the New Year, as we approach our work, our days, our joy, and challenges with renewed energy, wisdom, and strength.
During my R.U.S.H. Tour (Reading to Uplift Students of Hartford) —where I personally visit our elementary schools to read with our students– I teach our youngest learners to celebrate the joy of books and to understand that literacy is power. Reading is fundamental, and that the more they read, the smarter they will grow to make good decisions and make valuable contributions in our communities.
Over the break, while our students are out of school, don’t forget to keep igniting that love for reading in your own child or teenager. Show every single one of them that their story matters and their future is worth the work. Take out those books and read, and visit your local library branch for book recommendations, activities, events, and more.
Remember that all Hartford Public Library locations will be closed on Wednesday, December 24, and Thursday, December 25, in observance of Christmas. Locations will reopen with their regularly scheduled hours on Friday, December 26. Library branches will also be closed on Thursday, January 1, 2026, for New Year’s Day.
I am also looking forward to January when I will launch my Climate and Culture Tour! In the new year, I plan to visit with all our secondary students for discussions about our HPS Climate and Culture Core Values so they can know exactly what is expected for them to be SUCCESSFUL.
Rest well this Winter Break! When we return, together we’re going to ‘set the bar, meet the bar, exceed the bar, and raise the bar’ in everything we do! Working together, we are going to see Hartford rise!

Un Mensaje para el Receso de Invierno del Dr. Townsel
Estimados estudiantes, familias, personal, socios de la comunidad y amistades:
Quiero expresar mi gratitud a todas las personas que constituyen nuestra comunidad de las Escuelas Públicas de Hartford. He visto el buen trabajo que realizan en apoyo de nuestras escuelas durante todo el año, y lo valoro profundamente. Nuestros estudiantes, familias, maestros, personal y socios de la comunidad me inspiran cada día. Juntos, veo que avanzamos para elevar el estándar para todos nuestros estudiantes. Hemos trabajado muy duro, y les deseo un receso de descanso y paz. Además, espero con entusiasmo el Año Nuevo, mientras nos acercamos a nuestro trabajo, nuestros días, nuestra alegría y nuestros desafíos con energía renovada, sabiduría y fortaleza.
Durante mi gira R.U.S.H. (Reading to Uplift Students of Hartford — Lectura para Elevar a los Estudiantes de Hartford)—en la que visito personalmente nuestras escuelas primarias para leer junto a nuestros estudiantes— les enseño a nuestros estudiantes más jóvenes a celebrar la alegría de los libros y a comprender que la lectura es poder. Leer es fundamental, y mientras más lean, más crecerán en inteligencia para tomar buenas decisiones y hacer valiosas contribuciones en nuestras comunidades.
Durante este receso, mientras nuestros estudiantes están fuera de la escuela, no olviden seguir encendiendo ese amor por la lectura en su propio/a hijo/a o adolescente. Muéstrenle a cada uno/a que su historia es importante y que vale la pena hacer el esfuerzo hoy para lograr un futuro prometedor. Saquen esos libros y lean, y visiten su biblioteca más cercana para obtener recomendaciones de libros, actividades, eventos y más.
Recuerden que todas las sucursales de la Biblioteca Pública de Hartford estarán cerradas el miércoles 24 de diciembre y el jueves 25 de diciembre en observancia de la Navidad. Éstas reabrirán con su horario regular el viernes 26 de diciembre. Las bibliotecas también estarán cerradas el jueves 1 de enero de 2026 por el Día de Año Nuevo.
También espero con entusiasmo el mes de enero, cuando lanzaré mi Gira de Clima y Cultura. En el nuevo año, planeo visitar a todos nuestros estudiantes de secundaria para conversar sobre nuestros Valores Fundamentales de Clima y Cultura de HPS, para que sepan exactamente lo que se espera de ellos para tener ÉXITO.
¡Descansen bien durante este receso de invierno! Cuando regresemos, juntos vamos a “establecer el nivel, alcanzar el nivel, superar el nivel y elevar el nivel” en todo lo que hacemos. Trabajando unidos, veremos a Hartford elevarse.
