Bulkeley High School’s Computer Science Students Mentor Elementary Coders

During the annual Hour of Code activity for 2025, twenty-students from Bulkeley High School's pathway in Emerging Technology and Education/Public Service visited MD Fox School, Naylor School, and Betances Learning Lab Magnet School on December 17 to share coding activities that they had prepared to mentor students in 2nd - 5th grade.

Hour of Code 2025

This is the second year of this event in a partnership between HPS Technology & Career Connected Education and Ready CT. Superintendent Dr. Andraé Townsel was able to join students at MD Fox for this excellent, engaging mentorship activity. The Code Monkey coding activity was engaging, fun and effectively taught the young students how to write code line-by-line to reflect cause and effect on-screen.

Laurine Coco-Schenarts, Technology Educator at M.D. Fox School shared, "Thank you to all who organized the event. The Bulkeley students interacted beautifully with my students. and my students loved the extra attention they received from the high schoolers. Thank you for the wonderful opportunity you provided for both groups, I could not have imagined a better program."

Will Cheney, HPS Curriculum Specialist in Technology and Career Connected Learning stated, "What a great Hour of Code Link Up! I'm looking forward to the next one and already talking with partners about how we might tie in a link-up with the Lt. Governor's Computing Challenge - with technology students prototyping apps and education students facilitating the submission process."
