<NEW> Meeting our Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council
I was honored to meet and work alongside each new and returning member of my Student Advisory Council for the 2025-2026 school year. I am so eager to see what we can accomplish together. The Council, which is made up of 22 high schoolers, gathered on December 3 with district leaders, the CT Black & Brown Student Union, CT Youth Summit reps, and the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education (CABE) to prepare for their year of service as student representatives. This month, students will self-nominate and elect two members of the Council to act as their Board of Education representatives for the year. Each month, these representatives will meet with me to share topics and issues that are most pressing to their peers. You will get to meet them at our December 16 Board of Education meeting.
<NEW> Community Budget Forum: Kicking Off Fiscal Year 2026-2027
On December 3, our families and School Governance Council Members joined HPS CFO Caitlin Richard and me for dinner and a Community Budget Forum to kick off Fiscal Year 2026-2027 planning. <NEW> Hartford Co-op Football Team in the Class L Quarter-Final Playoff!
Also, on December 3, our Hartford Co-op Football team of student-athletes from Weaver High School, Hartford Public High School, and Classical Magnet hosted their CIAC quarter-final playoff game at Hartford Public High School against No. 5 seed Abbott Tech/Immaculate. I am so proud of our team, coaches, and schools for learning to unite as a single team to get the job done! The Hartford Co-op pulled away in the end with a final score of 63-28! Their next game, the semi-final takes place on Monday, December 8 at New Canaan High School (game time TBD, but likely 6 or 6:30 PM.) The winner of that game will advance to the Class L state championship game the weekend of December 13th.
And, congratulations to the Hartford Co-op for their 35-6 Turkey Day Game win over our Cap-Prep team. Every play on the turf is an opportunity to learn. Keep raising the bar, HPS!
<NEW> Welcome Center, Enrollment Center, and Central Office Move
Please know that beginning on Monday, December 8, 2025, the Hartford Public Schools Welcome Center, Enrollment Center, and Central Office will move to 330 Wethersfield Avenue, Hartford, CT, 06114. This is also the future, state-of-the-art home of Bulkeley High School and we are proud to be co-located with our Bulldogs when they arrive early in 2026. Our contact information and hours of operation remain the same!
<NEW> National Special Education Day 2025
Special Education Day is celebrated on December 2 to commemorate the signing of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA )into law on 12/2 in 1975. 50 years ago, this law pioneered progress in special education. The IDEA guarantees the right to a free and appropriate public education for all children with disabilities. It also highlights the continued need for inclusive and equitable learning opportunities. At HPS we honor the heroes who brought forth and signed this legislation.
<NEW> The School Selection Process is Underway
HPS has a lot to offer! Themed academies that engage young learners in studies from science, technology, and engineering to classical studies, performing arts, to character education/SEL. The Regional School Choice Office (RSCO) On-Time application for the 2026-27 school year, open to Hartford and suburban residents, opened on December 3. Learn more here and apply today.
Remember, the Hartford Promise Scholarship (up to $100K) is only available to Hartford residents who attend HPS Magnet or District (non-magnet) high schools for all four years, achieve a 93% or above attendance rate, and a 3.0 or above GPA!
<REMINDER> TOMORROW: The Season of Giving
Please join us tomorrow, Saturday, December 6, at the HPS Toy Drive (Collection) at Weaver High School, 415 Granby Street, Hartford, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Support Hartford Public Schools students by actively participating in this annual tradition where you can make the holiday season especially joyful for a student by donating an unwrapped toy for a child or a gift for a teenager. You may also donate toys at the Hartford City Toy Drive at the CT Convention Center beginning at 1:00 PM. Hartford Public Schools is proud to be part of the collection efforts, gathering donations at our HPS Central Office.
<NEW> RUSH Reading Tour at Kennelly School
I was overjoyed to resume my R.U.S.H. (Reading to Uplift the Students of Hartford) Tour this morning with Kennelly School students as part of a Positive Behavior Referral Celebration. Then, with Ms. Sullivan’s 3rd grade class, we read Snowmen at Work by Caralyn Buehner and enjoyed a great conversation about favorite books and football.
You’ve heard it before, but I’m saying it again: We’re going to ‘set the bar, meet the bar, exceed the bar, and raise the bar’ in everything we do. Working together, we are going to see Hartford rise!

Tuve el honor de reunirme y trabajar junto a cada uno de los miembros antiguos y recientes de mi Consejo Asesor Estudiantil para el año escolar 2025-2026. Estoy ansioso por ver lo que podemos lograr juntos. El Consejo, que está constituido por 22 estudiantes de la escuela secundaria, se reunió el 3 de diciembre con líderes del Distrito, la Unión de Estudiantes Negros y Morenos de Connecticut, los representantes de la Cumbre Juvenil de Connecticut y la Asociación de Juntas Educativas de Connecticut (CABE, por sus siglas en inglés) para prepararse para su año de servicio como representantes estudiantiles. Este mes, los estudiantes se autonominarán y elegirán a dos miembros del Consejo para que actúen como sus representantes en el Consejo de Educación durante el año. Estos representantes se reunirán conmigo, todos los meses, para compartir los temas y asuntos que más preocupan a sus compañeros. <NUEVO> ¡El equipo cooperativo de fútbol americano de Hartford en los cuartos de final de la Clase L!
Además, el 3 de diciembre, nuestro equipo cooperativo de fútbol americano de Hartford de estudiantes deportistas de la Escuela Secundaria Weaver, la Escuela Secundaria Pública de Hartford y la Escuela Técnico/Artística Classical, disputó su partido de cuartos de final de la Conferencia Deportiva Interescolar de Connecticut (CIAC, por sus siglas en inglés) en la Escuela Secundaria Pública de Hartford contra el quinto clasificado, Abbott Tech/Immaculate. ¡Estoy muy orgulloso de nuestro equipo, de los entrenadores y de las escuelas por aprender a unirse como un solo equipo para hacer el trabajo! ¡La Cooperativa de Hartford se impuso con un marcador de 63-28! <NUEVO> Día Nacional de la Educación Especial 2025
El Día de la Educación Especial se celebra el 2 de diciembre para conmemorar la firma de la Ley de Educación para Personas con Discapacidades (IDEA, por sus siglas en inglés) el 2 de diciembre de 1975. Hace 50 años, esta ley fue pionera en el avance de la educación especial. La IDEA garantiza el derecho a una educación pública gratuita y adecuada para todos los niños con discapacidades. También destaca la continua necesidad de oportunidades de aprendizaje inclusivas y equitativas. En las HPS honramos a los héroes que impulsaron y firmaron esta legislación.
<NUEVO> ¡El Proceso de selección de escuela está en marcha!
¡Las HPS tienen mucho que ofrecer! Academias temáticas que involucran a los jóvenes estudiantes en estudios que abarcan desde ciencias, tecnología e ingeniería hasta estudios clásicos, artes escénicas y educación del carácter o aprendizaje socioemocional (SEL, por sus siglas en inglés). El 3 de diciembre se abrió la solicitud oportuna para el año escolar 2026-2027 de la Oficina Regional de Elección Escolar (RSCO, por sus siglas en inglés), que está abierta para residentes de Hartford y los suburbios. Obtenga más información aquí y presente una solicitud hoy mismo
Recuerde, la Beca Hartford Promise (de hasta 100 mil dólares) solo está disponible para los residentes de Hartford que asisten a las escuelas secundarias técnico/artísticas o distritales (no técnico/artísticas) de las HPS durante los cuatro años y que logran una tasa de asistencia del 93 % o superior, y un promedio de calificaciones (GPA, por sus siglas en inglés) de 3.0 o superior.
<RECORDATORIO> MAÑANA: La temporada de la generosidad
Acompáñenos mañana sábado, 6 de diciembre, en la colecta de juguetes de las HPS en la Escuela Secundaria Weaver, 415 Granby Street, Hartford, de 9:00 a. m. a 2:00 p. m. Apoye a los estudiantes de las Escuelas Públicas de Hartford participando activamente en esta tradición anual en la que puede hacer que la temporada navideña sea especialmente alegre para un estudiante donando un juguete sin envolver para un niño o un regalo para un adolescente. También puede donar juguetes en la colecta de juguetes de la municipalidad de Hartford en el Centro de Convenciones de CT a partir de la 1:00 p. m. Las Escuelas Públicas de Hartford se enorgullecen de ser parte de los esfuerzos de colecta reuniendo donaciones en la Oficina Central de las HPS.
<NUEVO> Recorrido de lectura RUSH en la Escuela Kennelly
Estoy muy contento de reanudar mi recorrido de Lectura para animar a los estudiantes de Hartford, (RUSH, por sus siglas en inglés) esta mañana con los estudiantes de la Escuela Kennelly como parte de una celebración de referencia por el comportamiento positivo. Luego, con la clase de tercer grado de la Sra. Sullivan, leímos Snowmen at Work de Caralyn Buehner y disfrutamos de una gran conversación sobre libros favoritos y fútbol.
Sé que ya lo has escuchado antes, pero lo repito: Vamos a “establecer el estándar, alcanzar el estándar, superar el estándar y elevar el estándar” en todo lo que hacemos. Trabajando juntos, ¡veremos a Hartford elevarse otra vez!
