<NEW> Principals Month
October is National Principals Month, a time in which we honor the hard work and dedication of our principals. I have met all HPS’ leaders and I have been very impressed by their leadership, passion for education, and their commitment to our students and families. We recognize the lasting contributions our administrators make as they take charge of instructional leadership, school improvement, and strengthening culture, letting students know they are safe, valued, and respected. Thank you, principals, for your hard work, heartfelt dedication, strength, and for truly making each of our schools a haven of knowledge and community.

<NEW> Wrapping Up Hispanic Heritage Month
¡Feliz Mes de la Herencia Hispana! Our schools have been very busy celebrating, recognizing, and teaching Hispanic Heritage in classrooms and events too numerous to list here. From Hartford Public High School’s Cultural Heritage Week, to Dwight Bellizzi’s door decorating contest, quiz games at Milner, to daily announcements and podcasts. Beautiful assemblies were hosted at Breakthrough Magnet School - South, Naylor School, Great Path Academy, Dwight Bellizzi, and SAND School, and more. This month is more than a cultural celebration, as shared in powerful words by our Board members, Christher Estrada-Perez and Kory Mills. ¡Wepa!
<NEW> Students Participate in the Hartford Marathon
Congratulations to our young athletes who showed up and wowed us at the 2025 Hartford Marathon on October 11. Hartford Public High School Owls had three teams participate in the marathon relay, while our young Parkville Community School Panthers and their families, led by PE teacher Patrick Mairson, participated in the Kids Run. One of our Parkville students finished in 2nd place, while one of our HPHS Owls teams placed 13 out of 127 Relay Teams. They recalled, “It was electrifying to hear the announcer call out, ‘This is the OWL Team—Hartford Public High School, the second-oldest secondary school in the nation! Go Pub! Go Pub!’“
In a great show of community service, over 40 University High School students supported the runners by handing out water. Many of our students are getting ready for the FitKids Run sponsored by the Hartford Marathon Foundation at the end of October in New Britain. Special thanks to the Hartford Marathon Foundation who assisted with funding the buses used to transport students from Parkville School to Bushnell Park for the event.
<NEW> Celebrating Jinelle Hooker and Pedro Zayas
Big congratulations to two of our colleagues! On October 16, Jinelle Hooker, our Executive Director of Strategic Partnerships & Fund Development was honored by OPP at their 50th Anniversary Legacy Leaders Awards (alongside former U.S. Secretary of Education Dr. Miguel Cardona) with the System Builder in Education Award. Pedro Zayas, our Director of External Relations and Communications, was honored on October 9 as one of the 50 Connecticut Latinos of Distinction.

To our families who celebrate, I wish you a good Diwali on Monday, October 20. Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, symbolizes the spiritual victory of Dharma over Adharma, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance.
< NEW> My First 100 Days
Today was my 75th day of learning, listening, and sharing ideas with our HPS community. This week, I was very happy to meet with both our Principals and Assistant Principals at their monthly professional learning sessions. On Wednesday, I visited Ms. Alicea’s Parkville Community School 3rd grade classroom where I kicked off my R.U.S.H. Tour (Reading to Uplift Students of Hartford), a boots-on-the-ground literacy movement, where I personally visit elementary schools to read with our students, celebrate the joy of books, and inspire a culture where literacy is power and reading is fundamental. When students see their superintendent in their classrooms with a book in hand, they see that reading is leadership. Together, let’s ignite a love for reading across Hartford and show every child that their story matters and their future is worth the RUSH.
I was also honored to attend OPP’s 50th Anniversary celebration this week, and today, was engaged with safety at the Connecticut Targeted Violence & Terrorism Prevention Symposium 2025.

Reconocemos las contribuciones duraderas que hacen nuestros administradores al asumir el liderazgo instruccional, mejorar las escuelas y fortalecer la cultura escolar, lo que permite que los(as) estudiantes sientan seguridad, valoración y respeto. <NUEVO> Cierre del Mes de la Herencia Hispana
¡Feliz Mes de la Herencia Hispana! Nuestras escuelas han estado muy activas con celebraciones, reconocimientos y aprendizaje sobre la Herencia Hispana en aulas y múltiples eventos. Desde la Semana de la Herencia Cultural en Hartford Public High School, hasta el concurso de decoración de puertas en Dwight Bellizzi, juegos en Milner, notas diarias y podcasts. Se realizaron hermosas asambleas en Breakthrough Magnet School - South, Naylor School, Great Path Academy, Dwight Bellizzi, SAND School, y más. <NUEVO> Estudiantes Participan en el Maratón de Hartford
Felicitaciones a nuestros jóvenes atletas que participaron de forma impresionante en el Maratón de Hartford 2025 el 11 de octubre. Los Owls de Hartford Public High School tuvieron tres equipos participando en el relevo del maratón, mientras que los jóvenes Panthers de Parkville Community School y sus familias, bajo el liderazgo del maestro de educación física Patrick Mairson, participaron en la carrera infantil. A nuestras familias que celebran, les deseo un feliz Diwali el lunes 20 de octubre. Diwali, el festival hindú de las luces, simboliza la victoria espiritual del Dharma sobre el Adharma, la luz sobre la oscuridad y el conocimiento sobre la ignorancia.
<NUEVO> Mis primeros 100 días
Hoy fue mi 75vo día aprendiendo, escuchando y compartiendo ideas con nuestra comunidad de las Escuelas Públicas de Hartford. Esta semana, me alegró mucho reunirme con nuestros Principales y Principales Asistentes en sus sesiones mensuales de aprendizaje profesional. El miércoles, visité el aula de tercer grado de la Sra. Alicea en Parkville Community School, donde inicié mi gira R.U.S.H. (Reading to Uplift Students of Hartford), un movimiento de alfabetización con presencia directa, en el que visito personalmente escuelas primarias para leer con nuestros estudiantes, celebrar la alegría de los libros e inspirar una cultura donde la alfabetización es poder y la lectura es fundamental. Cuando los estudiantes ven a su superintendente en sus aulas con un libro en mano, ven que leer es liderar. Juntos, encendamos el amor por la lectura en todo Hartford y mostremos a cada niño que su historia importa y que su futuro es importante para todos.
También tuve el honor de asistir a la celebración del 50.º aniversario de OPP esta semana, y hoy participé en el Simposio 2025 de Prevención de Violencia Dirigida y Terrorismo de Connecticut.
