<NEW> Welcoming the Hartford Board of Educationās New Member
Madi Csejka is a proud Hartford resident and took the oath as a Board of Education member Tuesday during Decemberās Regular Meeting at Weaver High School. She is passionate about family engagement in education and helping students build the skills to thrive in college and in their career. Ms. Csejka currently serves as the Director of Communications for State Comptroller Sean Scanlon. Previously, she served on Governor Lamontās 2022 campaign and as the Executive Assistant to the Commissioner at the Connecticut State Department of Education, where she built and co-managed the nation's first student participatory budgeting campaign, Voice4Change.
Ms. Csejka received her Bachelorās in English Education from Southern Connecticut State University and holds a teaching certification in English/Language Arts for grades 4-12. She graduated with a Masterās in Public Administration from the University of Connecticut in 2023. She is now pursuing the University of Hartfordās Doctorate in Educational Leadership for Social Justice.
We are happy to serve alongside Ms. Csejka and we welcome her to the Hartford Public Schools community!
<NEW> HPS Students Represent at Central Connecticut Youth Empowerment Summit
The goal of the Central Connecticut Youth Empowerment Summit was to energize and inspire everyone attending by sharing what other schools are doing across Connecticut. On December 18, some 44 students from HPS high schools joined students from across Connecticut at Central Connecticut State University to present on topics that they are passionate about on a local, state, national, and/or global level. They led breakout rooms and shared presentations with the best events/practices taking place at their schools.
Each high school shared what they did in their planning session and at least one thing they will commit to for the 2025-26 school year. The students also planned what Social Justice and student-led initiatives will look like at their respective schools. This was a time for schools to plan for this year, whether for an event or to build on something already being done at their school. I am proud to cheer on our HPS students as their talent shone alongside their Connecticut peers.
<NEW> Bulkeley High Schoolās Computer Science Students Mentor Elementary Coders
Twenty-students from Bulkeley High School's pathway in Emerging Technology and Education/Public Service visited MD Fox School, Naylor School, and Betances Learning Lab on Wednesday to share coding activities that they had prepared to mentor students in 2nd - 5th grade. This is the second year of this event in a partnership between HPS Technology & Career Connected Education and Ready CT. I was able to join students at MD Fox for this excellent, engaging mentorship activity.
NEW> Recognizing our Arts for Attendance Contest Winners
At the Hartford Board of Education meeting this week, we recognized our 2025 Arts for Attendance contest winners! As we celebrate our 'Arts for Attendance' winners, we also celebrate the tangible progress we are making district-wide. Hartford Public Schools has made a concentrated effort to prioritize student engagement, creating environments where our students feel welcomed, valued, and engaged. As a result, we have seen an approximate 6% decrease in chronic absenteeism compared to December 2024. While we know there is more work to be done, this data proves that our collective commitment to help students show up is making a difference. Big congratulations to:

<NEW> Meeting the SSAC Student Board Reps at the Board Meeting
This month, student members of my Student Advisory Council elected two members of the Council to act as their Board of Education representatives. Each month, these representatives will meet with me to share topics and issues that are most pressing to them and their peers. They joined our Hartford Board of Education at our December 16 meeting and were able to address the public about their goals in service.
Congratulations to your new Student Council Officers and Representatives to the Board of Education, President and Board Member Student Representative, Micquandre Wright, a senior at Bulkeley High School, and Vice President and Board Member Student Representative, Shanlay Claude, a junior at Sport and Medical Sciences Academy.

<NEW> Winter Break Attendance Reminder
Due to our winter recess, there will be no school for students from December 24 through January 6. Students and teachers have an Early Release on Tuesday, December 23. Students will return to schools on Wednesday, January 7. I hope you spend the Winter Break relaxing, recharging, READING, and enjoying time with loved ones. We have a lot to accomplish when we return to the classrooms in January. I will see many of you on January 6 at the Three Kings Day Parade!

Madi Csejka se siente orgullosa de ser residente de Hartford y se juramentĆ³ como miembro de la Junta de EducaciĆ³n el martes durante la reuniĆ³n regular de diciembre en la Escuela Secundaria Weaver. Siente pasiĆ³n por la participaciĆ³n de la familia en la educaciĆ³n y por ayudar a los estudiantes a desarrollar las habilidades para prosperar en la universidad y en su carrera profesional. Actualmente, la Sra. Csejka presta servicio como Directora de Comunicaciones del Contralor del Estado Sean Scanlon. La Sra. Csejka recibiĆ³ su tĆtulo de Licenciatura en EducaciĆ³n del Idioma InglĆ©s en la Universidad Estatal del Sur de Connecticut y tiene una certificaciĆ³n como docente de InglĆ©s/Lengua y Literatura para los grados del 4.Ā° al 12.Ā° Se graduĆ³ de MagĆster en AdministraciĆ³n PĆŗblica en la Universidad de Connecticut en 2023. Actualmente, estĆ” cursando su Doctorado en Liderazgo Educativo y Justicia Social, en la Universidad de Hartford.

<NUEVO> Estudiantes de las HPS representan a la escuela en la Cumbre para el Empoderamiento Juvenil de Connecticut Central
El objetivo de la Cumbre para el Empoderamiento Juvenil de Connecticut Central era impulsar e inspirar a todos los asistentes al compartir lo que otras escuelas de Connecticut estĆ”n haciendo. El 18 de diciembre, unos 44 estudiantes de las escuelas secundarias de las Escuelas PĆŗblicas de Hartford (HPS, por sus siglas en inglĆ©s) se reunieron con estudiantes de todo Connecticut en la Universidad Estatal del Centro de Connecticut para presentar temas que les apasionan a nivel local, estatal, nacional y/o mundial. Dirigieron salas para grupos y compartieron presentaciones sobre los mejores eventos/prĆ”cticas que se llevan a cabo en sus escuelas.
Cada escuela secundaria compartiĆ³ lo que hicieron en su sesiĆ³n de planificaciĆ³n y al menos una cosa a la que se comprometĆa para el aƱo escolar 2025-26. Los estudiantes tambiĆ©n planificaron cĆ³mo serĆ”n las iniciativas de justicia social y las iniciativas dirigidas por estudiantes en sus respectivas escuelas. Fue un momento para que las escuelas planificaran el aƱo, ya fuera para organizar un evento o para desarrollar mĆ”s algo que ya se venĆan haciendo en su escuela.
De este dinĆ”mico evento del Consejo de EducaciĆ³n de la RegiĆ³n del Capitolio, me sentĆ orgulloso de animar a los estudiantes de las HPS cuando su talento brillĆ³ junto al de sus compaƱeros de Connecticut.
<NUEVO> Los estudiantes de informĆ”tica de la Escuela Secundaria Bulkeley asesoran a los alumnos de primaria en programaciĆ³n
Veinte estudiantes del itinerario de TecnologĆa emergente y educaciĆ³n/servicio pĆŗblico de la Escuela Secundaria Bulkeley visitaron la Escuela MD Fox, la Escuela Naylor y el Laboratorio de Aprendizaje Betances, el miĆ©rcoles, para compartir actividades de programaciĆ³n que habĆan preparado para asesorar a estudiantes de 2.Ā° a 5.Ā° grado. Este es el segundo aƱo de este evento de alianza entre TecnologĆa y educaciĆ³n vinculada a la carrera profesional de las HPS y Ready CT. Pude acompaƱar a los estudiantes de MD Fox para esta excelente y llamativa actividad de asesoramiento.

Reconocimiento a los ganadores del concurso de Arte para la asistencia, de 2025, en la reuniĆ³n de esta semana de la Junta de EducaciĆ³n de Hartford. Al honrar a nuestros ganadores de Ā«Arte para la asistenciaĀ», tambiĆ©n honramos el progreso tangible que estamos logrando en todo el distrito. Las Escuelas PĆŗblicas de Hartford han hecho un intenso esfuerzo por priorizar la participaciĆ³n estudiantil, creando entornos en los que nuestros estudiantes se sientan bendecidos, valorados y comprometidos. Como resultado, hemos visto una disminuciĆ³n de aproximadamente el 6 % en el absentismo crĆ³nico en comparaciĆ³n con diciembre de 2024. Aunque sabemos que hay trabajo por hacer, estos datos prueban que nuestro compromiso colectivo de ayudar a los estudiantes a asistir estĆ” marcando una diferencia. Muchas felicitaciones a:

<NUEVO> PresentaciĆ³n de los representantes estudiantiles del SSAC en la reuniĆ³n de la Junta
Este mes, los estudiantes miembro de mi Consejo Asesor Estudiantil (SSAC, por sus siglas en inglĆ©s) eligieron a dos miembros del Consejo para que sean sus representantes en la Junta de EducaciĆ³n. Estos representantes se reunirĆ”n conmigo, todos los meses, para compartir los temas y asuntos que mĆ”s les preocupan a ellos y a sus compaƱeros. Ellos se incorporaron a la Junta de EducaciĆ³n de Hartford en nuestra reuniĆ³n del 16 de diciembre y pudieron dirigirse al pĆŗblico para hablar sobre sus objetivos en el servicio.

<NUEVO> Recordatorio de asistencia relativo a las vacaciones de invierno
Debido a las vacaciones de invierno, del 24 de diciembre al 6 de enero, no habrĆ” clases para los estudiantes. Los estudiantes y docentes saldrĆ”n temprano el martes 23 de diciembre. Los estudiantes regresarĆ”n a clases el miĆ©rcoles, 7 de enero. Espero que pasen las vacaciones de invierno relajĆ”ndose, recargĆ”ndose, LEYENDO y disfrutando del tiempo con sus seres queridos. Tenemos mucho por lograr cuando regresemos a las aulas en enero. Ā”VerĆ© a muchos de ustedes el 6 de enero en el Desfile del DĆa de los Tres Reyes Magos!
