I am excited for this opportunity to help guide students, teachers, and all Hartford schools to achieve continued improvement, and ultimately to raise the bar for our young people through education and community engagement. <NEW> Hispanic Heritage Month Begins
I am proud to share that, in Hartford, almost 45% of residents identify as Hispanic or Latino, while about 34% of our students come from Spanish-speaking households. All year long, we embrace the diversity of our students and staff, and we are dedicated to creating a welcoming and supportive environment for everyone.
September 15 marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, when we highlight the achievements of Hispanic and Latino individuals, both past and present, through special events, classroom activities, and community partnerships. I hope you will join us in our celebrations, knowing that our pride and commitment to equity, inclusion, and our Hispanic and Latino community extends far beyond the next four weeks.
A big shout-out to Naylor School, which celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with a pep rally today. Students and staff joyfully participated in culturally relevant music and dance, relay races, and a teacher Limbo contest. The Naylor Knights shared information about the many cultural activities the school has on schedule for the rest of this month.

<NEW> September is Attendance Awareness Month
Parents, Guardians, Grandparents, Families! There is work we can do together to ensure all our students are in school every day. September is an important month for students: their attendance this month can set the pace for their future attendance for the remaining school year.
We know that attendance is key to child development, and we encourage all parents and guardians to bring their children to school every day.
If you need support in getting your child to school every day, please reach out to our Welcome Center at 860-695-8400, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. You can also visit the office at the Lobby Level of 280 Trumbull Street in Hartford.
<NEW> Upcoming Events Just for HPS Families!
I invite you to join me at one of two events for HPS Families where I look forward to meeting you and speaking with you. North Hartford Ascend is hosting a free Community Conversation on Wednesday, September 17, starting at 6:00 PM at Milner Middle School, which is located at 150 Tower Avenue in Hartford. They will provide a light dinner and Language Interpretation Services. Register here.
If you cannot attend this event, there is another opportunity on Thursday, September 18, starting at 6pm at Sanchez School, located at 176 Babcock Street in Hartford, which will be hosted by our HPS Strategic Partnerships and Fund Development team. We are providing dinner and refreshments, language interpretation services, and childcare. You can register here.
We also invite you to attend our Breakfast and Learn with HPS event tomorrow, Saturday, September 13 from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM at Milner Middle School at 150 Tower Avenue. Enjoy a Hot Breakfast, Interactive Family Learning about assessments, curriculum, special education, attendance, and more; plus fun activities for the kids, and a Grab-and-Go Lunch. <NEW> My First 100 Days
Today was my 40th day of learning, listening, and sharing ideas with our HPS community. This week, I was overjoyed to visit with staff and students at Parkville Community School and Naylor School. I was also so inspired by the sharing of ideas with representatives from Our Piece of the Pie, University of Hartford, Capital Workforce Partners, and 25 dynamic members of the Leadership Greater Hartford’s Executive Orientation cohort at their Education & Workforce Development Tour Day.

Estudiantes y personal participaron con alegría en música y danza culturalmente relevantes, carreras de relevos y un concurso de limbo entre maestros. Hoy fue mi día número 40 de aprendizaje, de escuchar e intercambiar ideas con nuestra comunidad de HPS. También me inspiró profundamente el intercambio de ideas con representantes de Our Piece of the Pie, la Universidad de Hartford, Capital Workforce Partners y 25 miembros dinámicos del grupo de Orientación Ejecutiva de Leadership Greater Hartford durante su Día de Recorrido sobre Educación y Desarrollo Laboral.
