Each time we attend Bulkeley High School On-track Parent-Teacher Conferences, it gets more and more crowded, and fun. If you have been a parent of a high school-aged child, and have attended Parent-Teacher Conferences, you know how bereft of attendees they can seem!
Bulkeley's leadership team with their Family and Community Service Support Provider (FCSSP,) Myrna Metayer-Rivera in the lead, have created the special sauce for hosting conferences that are packed with attendees, food, and fun. In fact, the Fall Parent-teacher Conferences were the highest attended Bulkeley event for the whole year!
On April 22, at the evening P/T Conferences, for the first time, Bulkeley hosted a Multicultural Potluck Food Festival. Families and students went from room to room visiting cool activities like yoga, face painting, making artwork, and more; in each room getting a stamp in their passbook. Special thanks for Activities include: to Ed Vargas, Former CT House Rep, on Guitar; Haitian-Themed Yoga with Hartford Board of Ed, Vice Chair, Francoise Leger's Flow Studio; and College & Career with Ms. Connie Coles. Other activities included: Games, Science & Spices with Ms. Smith, Postcard Making with Ms. Iacovelli and Mrs. Grabski, Movie: Cool Runnings with Mr. Walcott, Chamoy & Tajin Fruit Cup Station withTrinity College, La Voz Latina - LVL, a Multicultural Photo Booth with Mr. Welch, and the Southern Dessert with the Clean Your Plate Club and Ms. Smith-Davis.

Once your passbook was full you could visit the food fair, filled with delicious foods from the world-over! Raffles were also included with great prizes, and several community partners had information tables in the lobby.
The parent-teacher conferences themselves are also so smartly designed. All teachers are in the same large room so families can pop from teacher-visit to teacher-visit with ease. As families enter, they check in at a table where they can designate the language support they may need.
And, oh, yeah, Chompers!!!
Kudos to Bulkeley in their celebration of multiculturalism, community, and student progress. I can't wait for the next conferences!
