<NEW> Solidarity with our Caribbean Families
Hartford Public Schools stands in solidarity with the people of Jamaica, Haiti, Dominican Republic, and neighboring countries in the path of Hurricane Melissa’s devastation. As a richly diverse and multicultural city, many of us in Hartford Public Schools have deep roots and family connections to the Caribbean region. This is a somber time as we learn about the difficulties and dangers that our loved ones are experiencing.
As was the case with Hurricane Maria in 2017 and Fiona in 2022, we anticipate that some families will seek refuge in Hartford, and we are prepared to welcome them with open arms and multiple resources to overcome this tragedy. If you or your family members need support in this difficult time, please reach out to the Hartford Public Schools Welcome Center at 860-695-8400 or dial 2-1-1 to connect with human services in your area.
<NEW> Food Resources for Families: Potential Delay of November SNAP Benefits
Hartford Public Schools wants to ensure that our families are informed and have resources as we navigate changes in federal government policy. We understand this news is deeply concerning, and we want to ensure your family has clear information and resources regarding your Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. Due to the recent federal government shutdown, we have received notification that there is a significant risk of a delay or suspension of new SNAP benefits for the month of November 2025.

<NEW> Raising the Bar for our Seniors’ Post-Secondary Plans
I want to extend my thanks to so many of our community partners, and City of Hartford and HPS staff, for their dedication and teamwork in making our first Raising the Bar: Common Application Completion Event a true success! Your commitment to supporting our seniors at Bulkeley, Hartford Public and Weaver high schools as they took this important step toward their postsecondary future was inspiring and impactful. From guiding students through applications and essay drafts, informing them about career and internship possibilities, to creating a welcoming and encouraging environment, each of you played an essential role in helping our students with this important work.
This was possible thanks to your belief in our shared mission to ensure every student is prepared and supported in achieving success. Together, we’ve set a new standard for what’s possible when our schools and community come together. To our Strategic Partnerships and Fund Development Team: thank you again for your hard work, enthusiasm, and care in the creation and management of this important event. You truly helped us raise the bar!
I was also in attendance at the RISE Network Postsecondary Symposium, where I heard directly from current high school seniors as they shared their postsecondary aspirations: what has been supportive, what challenges they faced, and what they wished had been different. Their stories will provide practical takeaways to strengthen communication and planning with students and their families.

I am excited to announce this year’s winners of the “Arts for Attendance” contest! Each year, students and staff across the district create videos, visual arts, and slogans to encourage their students to attend school every day, and Stay in School! Our families and staff voted for their favorites in each category, and the winners’ work is shared online and throughout the district.

<NEW> Athletics Championship Season
I am so proud of all our student-athletes for their outstanding efforts in sports, and I am grateful for the support of their families, coaches and schools! Please see our 2025 champions below, AND our upcoming championship games. You can join us to cheer for our teams and athletes! In the High School Greater Hartford Conference (GHC) Cross Country, The University High (UHSSE) Boys team is the champion, with the Weaver Girls team finishing second at the championship meet. On October 27, UHSSE beat the Hartford Public High School Owls in boys soccer to win the 2025 GHC title! You can see all our GHC league champions here.
We’ll be cheering on our CIAC Semifinal Champions who are competing tonight in Girls and Boys Soccer. All games, times, and locations are subject to change. The best resource for up to date information is the CIAC TOURNAMENT CENTRAL. Congratulations to all our middle school sports champions and all students who competed in this tournament. Our middle school sports program is crucial for our students to stay active, and prepare for high school level athletics.
Our middle school Soccer semifinalists from Burr, HTMCA, and Kennelly all fought hard! Big shout-out to the winners, the HMTCA Phoenix who advance to play for the championship title on November 5! Our middle school girls volleyball team from Milner Middle School and SMSA squared off yesterday, and the championship was earned by the Milner Owls! Click here to see the top ten girls and boys from the Middle School Cross County Championships! Runners from Annie Fisher schools, Betances STEM, Hartford Magnet Trinity College Academy, Kennelly School, Milner Middle School, McDonough Middle School, and Noah Webster Microsociety competed at Elizabeth Park on Wednesday.
Up to 17 of our middle school cross country runners will be running off all that holiday candy when they compete at the 32nd CT Middle School State Cross Country Championship meet tomorrow, Saturday, November 1 at Wickham Park in Manchester, CT. This is the same site as the high school cross country state championship race. Athletes will participate in either a 1.7 mile or 2.3 mile race with other middle school students around the state. <NEW> Perfect PSAT Score
A gigantic shout-out to University High School of Science and Engineering freshman Diyalaksha Kalidasan, who earned a perfect score on the PSAT 8/9 practice test! A PSAT 8/9 perfect score is uncommon, as a score of 1440 is considered the top of the 99th percentile for both 8th and 9th graders! Diyalaksha also attended Annie Fisher STEM Magnet School for primary school -- another great Hartford public school! Keep on raising the bar, Diya!
<REMINDER> Schools Closed on Tuesday, November 4
As a reminder, all schools will be closed on Tuesday, November 4, for election day. Many of our buildings will be used as polling locations, and it is a full day of Professional Learning for staff. The District’s Central Office and Welcome Center will remain open. I encourage all of our staff, partners, families, and students 18 years and older to vote, fulfilling our civic duty to participate in democratic elections!
< NEW> My First 100 Days
Today was my 89th day of learning, listening, and sharing ideas with our HPS community. This week, I was very happy to: participate in Relay Instructional Round Classroom Observations at West Middle School and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School, attend meetings with our HPSA union, and our union leaders. I also attended the RISE Network Postsecondary Symposium, and visited MD Fox School. I had the opportunity to address our friends at Teach for America and learn more about their work in Hartford to develop and recruit a diverse and talented workforce of leaders in education.
I was also overjoyed to continue my R.U.S.H. Tour (Reading to Uplift Students of Hartford), a boots-on-the-ground literacy movement, in which I personally visit elementary schools to read with our students, celebrate the joy of books, and inspire a culture where literacy is power and reading is fundamental. This week I visited with students and teachers at Environmental Sciences Magnet School at Mary Hooker, Montessori Magnet School at Batchelder, and the special HallowRead event at Sánchez School! When students see their superintendent in their classrooms with a book in hand, they see that reading is leadership. Together, let’s ignite a love for reading across Hartford and show every child that their story matters and their future is worth the RUSH.

También asistí al Simposio Postsecundario de la Red RISE, donde escuché directamente a estudiantes de cuarto año de secundaria compartir sus aspiraciones postsecundarias: qué les ha apoyado, los desafíos que enfrentaron y lo que desearían que fuera diferente. Sus observaciones brindarán aprendizajes prácticos para fortalecer la comunicación y planificación con nuestros/as estudiantes y sus familias.
<NUEVO> Ganadores del concurso “Arte por la Asistencia”
¡Estoy emocionado de anunciar a los ganadores de este año del concurso “Arte por la Asistencia”! Cada año, estudiantes y personal de todo el distrito crean videos, obras de arte visual y lemas para motivar a los estudiantes a asistir a la escuela todos los días y ¡permanecer en la escuela! Nuestras familias y el personal votaron por sus presentaciones favoritas en cada categoría, y el trabajo de los ganadores se comparte en línea y a través de todo el distrito.

¡Estoy muy orgulloso de todos nuestros estudiantes atletas por su esfuerzo sobresaliente en los deportes, y agradecido por el apoyo de sus familias, entrenadores y escuelas! En la Conferencia de Escuelas Secundarias del Gran Hartford (GHC) en campo traviesa, el equipo masculino de University High (UHSSE) se coronó campeón, y el equipo femenino de Weaver obtuvo el segundo lugar en la competencia de campeonato. ¡Un enorme reconocimiento para Diyalaksha Kalidasan, estudiante de primer año en la Escuela Secundaria Universitaria de Ciencia e Ingeniería, quien obtuvo un puntaje perfecto en el examen de práctica PSAT 8/9! Un puntaje perfecto en el PSAT 8/9 es poco común, ya que un puntaje de 1440 se considera en el nivel más alto del percentil 99 para estudiantes de 8.º y 9.º grado. ¡Diyalaksha también asistió a la Escuela Magnet Annie Fisher STEM en sus años de primaria — otra excelente escuela pública de Hartford! ¡Sigue elevando el estándar, Diya!
<RECORDATORIO> Escuelas cerradas el martes 4 de noviembre
Como recordatorio, todas las escuelas estarán cerradas el martes 4 de noviembre debido al día de las elecciones. <NUEVO> Mis primeros 100 días
Hoy fue mi 89vo día aprendiendo, escuchando y compartiendo ideas con nuestra comunidad de las Escuelas Públicas de Hartford. Esta semana, me alegró mucho participar en las Observaciones de Aula del Programa Relay Instructional Round en las escuelas intermedias West Middle School y Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School, asistir a reuniones con nuestro sindicato HPSA y con líderes sindicales. También asistí al Simposio Postsecundario de la Red RISE, visité la escuela MD Fox, y me reuní con el “Sánchez Crew”, los líderes estudiantiles de la escuela Sánchez. Tuve la oportunidad de dirigirme a nuestros amigos de Teach for America y aprender más sobre su trabajo en Hartford para desarrollar y reclutar una fuerza laboral diversa y talentosa de líderes en educación.
También me llenó de alegría continuar con mi gira R.U.S.H. (Lectura para Elevar a los Estudiantes de Hartford), un movimiento de alfabetización con presencia directa, en el que visito personalmente escuelas primarias para leer con nuestros estudiantes, celebrar la alegría de los libros e inspirar una cultura donde la alfabetización es poder y la lectura es fundamental. Cuando los estudiantes ven a su superintendente en sus aulas con un libro en mano, ven que leer es liderar. Juntos, encendamos el amor por la lectura en todo Hartford y mostremos a cada niño que su historia importa y que su futuro es importante para todos.
