<NEW> Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council Learns about Leadership
On Thursday, April 10, the members of the Student Advisory Council (SSAC) met at the Trinity Innovation Center for their monthly meeting. This month, the interactive lessons centered on Leadership. In addition to Superintendent Torres-Rodriguez, special guests included Andre Santiago, Vice President & Chief Program Officer of Leadership Greater Hartford who gave the students a training on communication and public speaking. He also shared valuable interactive exercises in finding one’s inner confidence. Carmen Sierra, Hartford City Treasurer and Kory Mills, Assistant Treasurer and our Board of Education Secretary shared information about their career journeys, led the students through engaging activities, and invited the students to a Bilingual Financial Literacy Symposium on Saturday, May 31. Jennifer Hockenhull, our Board of Education Chairperson also came by to greet the students, and tell them about herself and her journey. It has been a meaningful year for me being able to engage with our SSAC student leaders, watching them grow in confidence, in community, and seeing them realize the power of both.
<NEW> Weaver High School Students Present to Hartford Mayor Arunan Arulampalam
I am excited to share that on Tuesday, April 8, students in the Finance and Insurance Pathway at Weaver High School presented 4 business case presentations about municipal improvements to Hartford Mayor Arunan Arulampalam. The presentations focused on revitalizing our parks, transforming our neighborhoods, creating community spaces with locally grown foods and farmers markets and providing more affordable housing. The presentations were extremely informative on the state of the city and offered valuable insight and solutions on how to improve Hartford. It gave me great pride to watch the students present and see all of the hard work they put into their presentations first-hand. I especially want to thank Pamela Ennis at Ready CT for helping prepare the students for the presentation.
After the presentations, the students had a Q&A with Mayor Arulampalam in which the students learned more about the mayor’s work managing Hartford, and shared their thoughts and concerns on city issues. I was very impressed by their thoughtful questions and curiosity.
I am incredibly appreciative to Mayor Arulampalam for taking the time to listen to the students as well as offering them opportunities to have seats at the table on committees that are working to revitalize Hartford.

<NEW> Hartford NEXT "It's Our City" Series, Episode 11: "Teaching the Children"
I am thrilled to invite you to join me for my upcoming interview on the Hartford NEXT "It's Our City" Series, Episode 11: "Teaching the Children" on Saturday, April 12 from 10:00-11:30 AM at Noah Webster MicroSociety Magnet School in the library. I have the pleasure of being interviewed by Matt Larson, West End NRZ Board Member who will host the episode. I will also be joined by an in-person audience and will answer questions from attendees in-person and online.
I’m excited to discuss my background, career journey and the important work we have done and continue to do at Hartford Public Schools to help students succeed in school and beyond. I’ll also address the challenges and opportunities facing our schools.

<NEW> Baseball Season Going Strong
This April marks the start of baseball season as we welcome the spring weather. Please join me in cheering on our student athletes at their games including those at beautiful Dunkin’ Park! Follow up with your local schools for more information on game schedules. I want to give a special shout-out to all our student athletes, coaches and families for delighting us with another incredible season of HPS sports. We’ve come a long way to build our sports teams from middle school to high school. I look forward to seeing all of you at the ballpark this year!

<REMINDER> Wishing You a Happy and Safe Spring Break
As a reminder, Spring Recess takes place next Monday, April 14 through Thursday, April 17. The district will be closed on Good Friday, April 18. Thank you to our community partners and staff members who are spending their break providing students with additional academic support and enrichment! Your work is greatly appreciated. I wish students, staff and families a very happy, safe, and restful break. I look forward to seeing everyone back in our schools on Monday, April 21, feeling recharged and ready to take on the rest of the school year!

<NUEVO> El Consejo Asesor Estudiantil del Superintendente aprende sobre liderazgo
El jueves, 10 de abril, los miembros del Consejo Asesor Estudiantil (SSAC, por sus siglas en inglés) se reunieron en el Centro Trinity Innovation para su reunión mensual. Este mes, las lecciones interactivas se centraron en el liderazgo. Además del Superintendente Torres Rodríguez, algunos de los invitados fueron Andre Santiago, Vicepresidente y Director del Programa Leadership Greater Hartford (Liderazgo de Greater Hartford) quien ofreció a los estudiantes una capacitación sobre comunicación y oratoria. También compartió ejercicios interactivos valiosos para encontrar la confianza interior. Carmen Sierra, Tesorera de la Ciudad de Hartford y Kory Mills, Tesorera Asistente y nuestra Secretaria de la Junta de Educación compartieron información sobre sus trayectorias profesionales, guiaron a los estudiantes en actividades atrayentes e invitaron a los estudiantes a un Simposio de Alfabetización Financiera Bilingüe el sábado, 31 de mayo. Jennifer Hockenhull, nuestra Presidente de la Junta de Educación también vino para saludar a los estudiantes y para contarles sobre sí misma y su trayectoria. Ha sido un año muy significativo para mí, ya que he podido trabajar con nuestros líderes estudiantiles de la SSAC, verlos crecer en confianza, en comunidad y verlos darse cuenta del poder de ambas cosas.
<NUEVO> Los estudiantes de la Escuela Secundaria Weaver se presentan ante el Alcalde de Hartford, Arunan Arulampalam
Me complace compartir que el martes, 8 de abril, los estudiantes del Programa de Finanzas y Seguros de la Escuela Secundaria Weaver le presentaron 4 casos empresariales referentes a mejoras municipales al Alcalde de Hartford, Arunan Arulampalam. Las presentaciones se centraron en la revilitalización de nuestros parques, la transformación de nuestros vecindarios, la creación de espacios comunitarios con alimentos cultivados localmente y mercados de granjeros, y la provisión de más viviendas asequibles. Las presentaciones fueron extremadamente informativas sobre el estado de la ciudad y ofrecieron valiosas ideas y soluciones sobre cómo mejorar Hartford. Me llenó de gran orgullo ver a los estudiantes presentar y observar de primera mano el arduo trabajo que dedicaron a sus presentaciones. Quiero agradecer especialmente a Pamela Ennis de Ready CT por ayudar a los estudiantes a prepararse para la presentación.
Luego de la presentación, los estudiantes tuvieron una sesión de preguntas con el Alcalde Arulampam en la que los estudiantes obtuvieron más información sobre el trabajo del alcalde en la gestión de Hartford, y compartieron sus ideas y preocupaciones sobre asuntos de la ciudad. Estoy muy impresionado por reflexivas preguntas y su curiosidad.
Estoy increíblemente agradecido con el Alcalde Arulampalam por tomarse el tiempo de escuchar a los estudiantes y ofrecerles la oportunidad de participar en los comités que trabajan para la revitalización de Hartford.

<NUEVO> La temporada de béisbol avanza con fuerza
Este abril marca el inicio de la temporada de béisbol cuando damos la bienvenida al clima de primavera. ¡Acompáñenme a animar a nuestros atletas estudiantes en sus juegos, incluso aquellos en el hermoso Dunkin’ Park! Consulte en su escuela local para mayor información sobre los horarios de los juegos. Quiero hacer un reconocimiento especial a todos nuestros atletas estudiantes, entrenadores y familias por deleitarnos con otra increíble temporada deportiva de las Escuelas Públicas de Hartford (HPS, por sus siglas en inglés). Hemos recorrido un largo camino para conformar los equipos deportivos de las escuelas intermedias y secundarias. ¡Espero verlos a todos en el estadio este año!

<RECORDATORIO> Deseo que tengan unas vacaciones de primavera felices y seguras
A modo de recordatorio, el receso de primavera tendrá lugar del próximo lunes, 14 de abril, al jueves, 17 de abril. El distrito estará cerrado el Viernes Santo, 18 de abril. ¡Gracias a los aliados de la comunidad y los miembros del personal que pasan sus vacaciiones brindando apoyo y enriquecimiento académicos adicionales a los estudiantes! Su trabajo es muy valorado. Deseo que los estudiantes, el personal y las familias tengan unas vacaciones felices, seguras y tranquilas. ¡Espero con ansias verlos a todos de regreso en nuestras escuelas el lunes, 21 de abril, sintiéndose recargados y listos para afrontar el resto del año escolar!
