<NEW> Hartford Foundation for Public Giving (HFPG) $100k Scholarship Announcement
I’m thrilled to share that the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving has announced a transformative new scholarship for Hartford Promise Scholars. This historic collaboration ensures that all future Hartford Promise Scholars will be eligible for a Hartford Promise Scholarship of up to $20,000, which includes comprehensive student support. Additionally, they may also qualify for up to $80,000 from the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving through the new Greater Futures Scholarship.
From 2016, Hartford Promise established four requirements for students to meet to qualify for our scholarship. To be eligible, students need to meet all four of the following:
Attend a Hartford public high school continuously from 9th grade through graduation
Be a Hartford resident throughout high school
Maintain a 93% or better cumulative attendance record
Have a 3.0 or higher unweighted cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale
These criteria are firmly established; all students who meet all four of these criteria automatically become Hartford Promise Scholars. I encourage everyone to look into this new initiative which can ease the burden of student debt and offer new opportunities for countless students and families in our Hartford Public Schools community.
<NEW> Board of Education Adopts FY 2025-2026 Hartford Public Schools Budget
The Board of Education adopted the proposed FY 2025-26 Itemized Estimate of Expenditures in the amount of $452,110,104 effective July 1, 2025, at the April 15 Board meeting. This budget is the culmination of five months of Board, community, school, and district team engagement to make resource decisions for the next school year as we navigate a structural deficit. I am committed to continuing our work with the board to find new funding strategies in order to fully restore services and programs which had to be eliminated or reduced in order to pass a balanced budget, and to advocate for the needs of Hartford Public Schools.
Hartford Public Schools has faced flat funding and a structural deficit for over a decade, which has required the board to make $170 million in cuts to balance the budget since 2016.
The budget process for 2025-2026 began with a projected 30 million dollar deficit
District staff have already identified $15.3 in reductions to services to close this gap.
Revenue projections leave a remaining budget deficit of $6.7 million
The programs and services that would need to be cut without an additional $6.7 million have been identified by the district and the superintendent
The Hartford Board of Education will ask the City of Hartford to identify an additional appropriation of $6.7 million to fund essential programs. If no additional funding is identified through this process, the reductions totaling $6.7M will be finalized. We are actively planning for these potential reductions and have begun informing staff to ensure effective communication and implementation. While we continue to advocate for the full funding of a robust public education system, we will also be as transparent as possible about the challenges and choices we are making to close the deficit. We will continue to communicate with you and our broader school community where we are in the budget process as more information becomes available.

<NEW> Funding Advocacy Postcards
I’m excited to announce that Hartford Public Schools is delivering funding advocacy postcards in English and Spanish. The postcards are being delivered to each school for families, adult students, guardians, and school staff to sign and then drop off in their school’s advocacy mailbox. We are asking parents and educators to fill out one postcard per adult in each household, if possible, including their town and legislative district number. Postcards will be collected and presented to legislators in a few weeks as the state’s biennial budget process continues at the Capitol. Together, we will ensure that all Hartford students get access to a high-quality education that helps our city’s children and young adults succeed in school and life.

<NEW> Hartford Robotics Teams Shine in NE FIRST Robotics Championship
I’m excited to update you with more exciting news from our high school robotics teams. The Birds of Prey, team 181 with members from Hartford Public High School, Classical Magnet School, and Pathways Academy of Technology and Design, and the Dragons team 1991 from University High School of Science and Engineering and the Auerfam 4-H Club qualified to compete in this year's NE FIRST District Championship from April 3-5.
The NE FIRST Robotics Competition has teams design, build and program robots to compete in games. The top 96 teams from New England attend and compete for the title of New England Champion. The competition format splits the group into two fields, 48 teams each, where teams must compete and win their individual fields before a final match occurs between the separate winners to be crowned the champion. The Birds of Prey and Dragons competed on the field named "Ballard". The Birds of Prey finished with a qualification record of 4-8 finishing in rank 39 for their field. The Dragons achieved a qualification record of 5-7 placing them in rank 42. I’d like to extend my congratulations to both teams on their excellent performances and for representing Hartford Public Schools so well in STEM.

<NEW> Celebrating Administrative Professionals
Administrative Professionals Day is observed next Wednesday, April 23. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to all of our administrative professionals for the crucial work they do in the service of our students, families, and staff. They play a key role in helping our schools and Central Office run effectively. Thank you for your organization, attention to detail, and dedication to creating a positive learning environment and welcoming culture. I encourage everyone to take the time next week to thank the administrative professional in your school!

<NUEVO> Postales de apoyo a la financiación
Me complace anunciar que las Escuelas Públicas de Hartford están entregando tarjetas postales en inglés y español. Las postales se están entregando a cada escuela para que las familias, los estudiantes adultos, los tutores y el personal de la escuela firmen y luego dejen en el buzón de apoyo de su escuela. Estamos pidiendo a los padres y educadores que completen una postal por adulto en cada hogar, si es posible, y que incluyan el número de su ciudad y distrito legislativo. <NUEVO> Los equipos de robótica de Hartford brillan en el Campeonato de robótica de NE FIRST
Me complace ponerles al día con más noticias emocionantes de nuestros equipos de robótica de escuela secundaria. El Birds of Prey, equipo 181 con miembros de la Escuela Secundaria Pública de Hartford, la Escuela Magnet Clásica y la Academia de Tecnología y Diseño Pathways, y el equipo Dragons 1991 de la Escuela Secundaria Universitaria de Ciencia y Tecnología y el Auerfam 4-H Club calificaron para competir en el Campeonato de distrito de NE FIRST de este año del 3 al 5 de abril.

El próximo miércoles 23 de abril se celebra el Día de los profesionales administrativos. Me gustaría aprovechar esta oportunidad para expresar mi más sincero agradecimiento a todos nuestros profesionales administrativos por el trabajo crucial que realizan al servicio de nuestros estudiantes, familias y personal. Desempeñan un papel fundamental para que nuestras escuelas y la Oficina central funcionen eficazmente. Gracias por su organización, atención al detalle y dedicación para crear un entorno de aprendizaje positivo y una cultura inclusiva. Animo a todos a que la semana que viene dediquen un momento a dar las gracias al profesional administrativo de su escuela.
