<NEW> 2025 Education Leadership Conference
I had the honor of giving the keynote address at Yale University’s 2025 Education Leadership Conference. The theme of this year’s conference was The Engagement Imperative: Rethinking Student, Family and Staff Engagement which explored the evolving challenges and opportunities in student, family, and staff engagement and its impact on postsecondary success.
In my keynote, I discussed our strategies for addressing these challenges and the lessons I have learned from my eight-year tenure at Hartford Public Schools as the second-longest serving superintendent in the district’s history–and the longest-serving Latina superintendent in an urban district in the country. I raised awareness on the budget issues that we are currently facing and our vision for the future of education. Also, I discussed the work we are doing to support our educators and retain talent. Lastly, I talked about the strides we have made together in cohort graduation rates, and the gains we achieved in helping our students with disabilities and multilingual learners.
<NEW> Finalists for Teacher of the Year Announced!
I love any opportunity to celebrate the great work of our educators. This week, I had the pleasure of surprising three teachers with the news that they are finalists for our 2025 Teacher of the Year award! Please join me in congratulating Ms. Ashantee Hyman, a science teacher at Milner Middle School, Ms. Caitlin Daly, an art teacher at Hartford Public High School, and Mr. Keon Ruiter, a second-grade teacher at Sanchez School.
I am very proud of the work these educators have done to lift up our students and help them achieve. The winner will be announced on Thursday, May 22, 2025 at an awards ceremony, funded solely by our generous corporate sponsors and by ticket sales, held at the Hartford Downtown Marriott Hotel.
<RECAP> Select Committee on Special Education Public Hearing
On April 21, I was proud to join students, staff members, community partners, and union leaders, as we testified before the Connecticut Select Committee on Special Education. We advocated for House Bill 7277, which would provide additional funding for our highest needs students.
I had the opportunity to testify before the committee along with Hartford Mayor Arunan Arulampalam and Carol Gale, Hartford Federation of Teachers President. Among the testimonies were students from the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council including Christina Jackson, the president of the SSAC and senior at HPHS and Kieanna Headley, a sophomore at Great Path Academy who spoke and submitted written testimony. Additionally, multiple Board Members spoke and submitted written testimony including Jennifer Hockenhull, Chairperson, Tyrone Walker, Second Vice-Chairperson, Shonta Browdy, Board Member, Steven Tatum, Board Member, and Cristher Estrada-Perez, Board Member. Board members who submitted written testimony included Ruth R. Fortune and Stephen Wilson. I’d like to extend my appreciation to everyone who testified in support of the bill and thank our Hartford Public Schools community for their support in providing the best education possible for all our students.

<NEW> National Bilingual/Multilingual Learner Advocacy Month
April marks National Bilingual/Multilingual Learner Advocacy Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the diverse language and rich cultural backgrounds of our students. Bilingual and multilingual learners are the fastest-growing student group in America. This month we celebrate their accomplishments, affirm the assets that they bring to the educational environment, and advocate for the resources they need to succeed in school and life.
<NEW> School Bus Driver Appreciation Day
School Bus Driver Appreciation Day was on Tuesday, April 22. I would like to acknowledge our dedicated school bus drivers for keeping our students safe on their daily commutes. Whether carrying our students to school, home, activities, or to sporting events these dedicated individuals can be relied upon for their vigilance and care. School bus drivers play a crucial role in ensuring our students have access to education and community connection. I encourage all of the HPS community to join me in thanking them for all that they do in meeting our students' transportation needs.
<REMINDER> Capital Prep Social Justice Conference
I’m excited to announce that Capital Prep will be hosting its 9th annual Social Justice Conference this Saturday, April 26 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. This year’s theme is Unfinished Business: Breaking Barriers, Building Tomorrow. The conference will showcase the work of our students as social justice leaders. I have the pleasure of being on a panel at this event that will discuss solutions for pressing injustices we face today.
This is a wonderful opportunity to engage the community in meaningful and productive dialogue about equity and change. There will also be community partners there to connect attendees with resources available in the area. I encourage you to join me in supporting our students and their cause to combat social injustice in the HPS community and beyond.
<REMINDER> Supporting our Student Athletes in Spring Sports
This April please join me in supporting our student athletes as they compete in spring sports like baseball, softball, tennis, outdoor track, volleyball, golf and lacrosse. I encourage everyone to attend games at schools and even Dunkin' Park to cheer on our student athletes. We want every student to have the chance to participate in sports programs that provide opportunities for leadership, scholarship and sportsmanship. I look forward to another great season and wish all of our student athletes, coaches and families good luck in their upcoming games!

<NUEVO> Conferencia de liderazgo educativo 2025
Tuve el honor de dar el discurso de apertura de la Conferencia de liderazgo educativo 2025 en la Universidad de Yale. El imperativo del compromiso: Replanteamiento del compromiso de los estudiantes, las familias y el personal, en el que se analizaban los retos y oportunidades cambiantes del compromiso de los estudiantes, las familias y el personal y su repercusión en el éxito después de la secundaria.
En mi discurso de apertura hablé sobre nuestras estrategias para abordar estos desafíos y sobre la lección que he aprendido en mis ocho años en las Escuelas Públicas de Hartford como superintendente con el segundo tiempo de servicio prestado más prolongado en la historia del distrito, y como la superintendente latina con mayor tiempo de servicio en un distrito urbano del país. Desperté la concientización sobre los problemas de presupuesto que estamos afrontando actualmente y nuestra visión para el futuro de la educación. Además, hablé sobre el trabajo que estamos haciendo para apoyar a nuestros educadores y retener el talento. Me encanta cualquier oportunidad de celebrar el gran trabajo de nuestros educadores. ¡Esta semana, tuve el placer de sorprender a tres maestras con la noticia de que son las finalistas para nuestro premio Maestro del año 2025! Por favor, acompáñenme para felicitar a la Sra. <NUEVO> Audiencia pública del Comité Restringido de Educación Especial
El 21 de abril, me sentí muy orgullosa de unirme a los estudiantes, miembros del personal, aliados comunitarios y líderes sindicales para testificar ante el Comité restringido de Educación Especial. Abogamos por el proyecto de ley 7277, que proporcionaría financiamiento adicional para nuestros estudiantes con mayores necesidades.
Tuve la oportunidad de testificar ante el comité junto con el alcalde de Hartford Arunan Arulampalam y Carol Gale, la Presidente de la Federación de Educadores de Hartford. <NUEVO> Mes nacional de la defensa de los aprendices bilingües/multilingües
Abril es el Mes nacional de la defensa de los aprendices bilingües/multilingües, un momento de reconocer y celebrar la diversidad lingüística y la riqueza cultural de nuestros estudiantes. Los aprendices bilingües y multilingües son el grupo estudiantil de más rápido crecimiento en los Estados Unidos. Este mes celebramos sus logros, afirmamos las ventajas que aportan al entorno educativo y abogamos por los recursos que necesitan para tener éxito en la escuela y en la vida.
<NUEVO> Día de reconocimiento del conductor del autobús escolar
El martes, 22 de abril, fue el Día de reconocimiento del conductor del autobús escolar. Quiero reconocer a nuestros dedicados conductores de los autobuses escolares por mantener seguros a nuestros estudiantes en sus desplazamientos diarios. Al llevar a nuestros estudiantes a la escuela, a casa, a actividades o a eventos deportivos, podemos confiar en la supervisión y cuidado de estas dedicadas personas. Los conductores de autobuses escolares juegan un rol crucial para garantizar a nuestros estudiantes el acceso a la educación y la conexión con la comunidad. Animo a toda la comunidad de las Escuelas Públicas de Hartford (HPS, por sus siglas en inglés) a acompañarme a agradecerles por todo lo que hacen por satisfacer las necesidades de trasporte de nuestros estudiantes.
<RESUMEN> Conferencia de justicia social de la Preparatoria Capital
Me complace anunciar que la Preparatoria Capital celebrará su 9.° Conferencia anual de justicia social este sábado, 26 de abril, de 10:00 a. m. a 2:00 p. m. El tema de este año es «Asuntos pendientes: Superar las barreras, construir el mañana». La conferencia exhibirá el trabajo de nuestros estudiantes como líderes de justicia social. Tengo el placer de estar en un panel en este evento que discutirá las soluciones para las injusticias acuciantes a las que nos enfrentamos hoy en día.
Esta es una oportunidad maravillosa para involucrar a la comunidad en un diálogo significativo y productivo sobre la equidad y el cambio. También habrá allí aliados comunitarios para conectar a los asistentes con los recursos disponibles en la zona. Los animo a que me acompañen a apoyar a nuestros estudiantes y a su causa de luchar contra la injusticia social en la comunidad de las HPS y más allá.
<RESUMEN> Apoyo a nuestros estudiantes deportistas en los deportes de verano
En este mes de abril, acompáñenme a apoyar a nuestros estudiantes deportistas cuando compitan en deportes de primavera tales como béisbol, softball, tenis, atletismo al aire libre, voleibol, golf y lacrosse. Invito a todos a asistir a los juegos en las escuelas e incluso en el Parque Dunkin' para animar a nuestros estudiantes deportistas. Queremos que todos los estudiantes tengan la oportunidad de participar en los programas deportivos que brindan oportunidades de liderazgo, becas y espíritu deportivo. ¡Espero con ansias otra gran temporada y le deseo buena suerte a todos nuestros estudiantes deportistas, entrenadores y familias en sus próximos juegos!
