I am shouting out our teachers for National Teacher Appreciation Day (May 5) and during National Teacher Appreciation Week (May 4-May 8.) Hartford Public Schools’ educators show up every day, pouring care and energy into their students’ lives, because our students deserve nothing less. Our teachers work tirelessly to provide high-quality instruction and engaging opportunities for all our students' success. They are mentors, role models, and trusted adults who encourage students to pursue their dreams.
Our teachers also make sure our students have trustworthy information that prepares them not just to graduate, but to compete at high levels and succeed in a global economy. When our students are informed, they are empowered. When students are empowered, they are unstoppable. Hartford Public Schools educators raise the bar, inspiring innovation and modeling leadership. They call out passionately for change, speaking truth to power to ensure our students, and their fellow educators can get what they need, what is fair, and what is right.

<NEW> Our 2026 Hartford Promise Inductees
Hartford kept its promise, and our students are stepping boldly into their promising future! On April 27, every high school across Hartford Public Schools was represented at the Hartford Promise Induction Ceremony, where more than 100 scholars earned scholarships that are worth up to $100,000.
I had the honor of speaking at the ceremony held at the University of Saint Joseph, and my message was clear: “DON’T JUST GO TO COLLEGE GO THROUGH COLLEGE! Barriers are being broken. Dreams are becoming reality. This is what happens when a city invests in its young people and delivers on its word.”
I congratulate all our Hartford Promise Inductees on their hard work, perseverance, and grit.

National School Nurse Day was May 6! This day offered a wonderful opportunity to recognize the essential role our school nurses play in keeping students healthy, safe, and ready to learn. From managing daily health needs to responding to unexpected emergencies, our nurses serve as true anchors in our school communities.
<NEW> Hartford Public Schools STEM Fair 2026: Celebrating Science, Engineering and Innovation in our Schools
It was with great pride that I delivered opening remarks this morning for the Hartford Public Schools annual Districtwide STEM Fair at Bulkeley High School. This year’s theme was “HPS Is Phenomenal: We Are Phenomenal/I Am Phenomenal,” a celebration of the amazing science in our everyday lives. From big moments to small wonders, we want students to explore what makes their experiences “phenomenal” by turning real-world observations into questions, investigations, and solutions.
More than 370 talented students in grades 3-12 from 23 schools attended the fair to explore creativity and innovation in a wide range of STEM projects. The District STEM Fair celebrates student curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving through science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Students investigate phenomena, construct explanations, develop solutions, and share their learning with the community. Students explored projects and interactives from schools across our district, engaged in a science demonstration with the Children’s Museum, explored careers in STEM fields through our high school pathways and industry partners, heard from speakers in the STEM fields, and visited our Esports exhibition. High school students in our Pathway Program booths shared their passions for various STEM pathways across our district.
Thank you to our amazing partners, judges, and attendees for their support. A big shout-out to our STEM Curriculum team and science and math teachers for inspiring a love of STEM in our students.
<NEW> The Third Annual Hartford Public Schools String Orchestra Festival
I was so proud to welcome everyone to our Third Annual Hartford Public Schools String Orchestra Festival this morning at the Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School Campus auditorium. 120 string students from four schools, Noah Webster MicroSociety Magnet, Hartford Magnet Trinity College Academy, Renzulli Academy, and Great Path Academy performed in two groups, a high school group and a middle school orchestra. All of the students joined together at the end to perform two selections as part of the grand finale. Guest conductor Stephen Wood has conducted all three of our String Orchestra Festivals so far.
Wood is a retired strings teacher from Glastonbury’s Smith Middle and Gideon Welles Schools. He is a violinist trained at Oberlin College and the Hartt School of Music who teaches violin and viola and plays violin in the Hartford area. Mr. Wood started his teaching career in the Hartford Public Schools in 1985 by helping to bring back the string program after a long absence. Thank you to our music teachers for continuing to light and carry the torch for music education for our young, developing minds!
<NEW> Our 2027 Paraeducator of the Year and 2026 FCSSP of the Year!
I am excited to announce that Daniela Figueroa from Hernán LaFontaine Classical Magnet School earned the title of Hartford Public Schools 2027 Paraeducator of the Year, and Jacqueline Avilés of Burns Latino Studies Academy earned the 2026 Family and Community Support Service Provider (FCSSP) of the Year prize. There is great purpose in the work that our partners, Paraeducators, and our FCSSPs do for our students, from providing before and after care, to creating engaging and enriching experiences throughout the school year, during summer, and beyond, to connecting families to resources, information, and enabling more involvement in their child’s education. We know that the experiences and lessons that these passionate people provide to our students will stay with them throughout their lives.

The Paraeducator of the Year award honors one paraeducator who has demonstrated exceptional skill and dedication in the performance of their job, thereby earning that person the respect and admiration of other paraeducators, students, teachers, administrators, co-workers, and parents. I would like to praise Ms. Figueroa for being an example of excellence for all educators!
Our Family and Community Support Service Providers are responsible for multiple workshops and community events with our partners each year. But their work doesn't stop when the events end. Every day, they are on the front lines, conducting home visits to build trust with our families, diligently monitoring student attendance, and providing the essential backbone for our PTOs and School Governance Councils. They don't just work in our schools; they build the bridges that connect our classrooms to our neighborhoods. A big shout-out to Ms. Avilés, our FCSSP of the Year, from Burns Latino Studies Academy! <NEW> Walk or Roll to School Day
I had so much fun on the annual Walk or Roll to School Day this year with students, staff and families from Wish Museum School! On May 6, we gathered at the Liberty Christian Center and rolled our way on bikes, scooters and on foot to Wish School – with a special escort from the Hartford Police Department and HPS School Safety Officers.
Walk or Roll to School Day is an annual, global event celebrated this year on May 6, and supported in Connecticut by CT Safe Routes to School (SRTS), that encourages students to walk, bike, or use other active, non-motorized transportation to school. It promotes healthy habits, safety, and community, with thousands of schools nationwide participating to raise awareness for safer routes to school. Thank you to the CT Department of Transportation, the Hartford Police Department, HPS’ Chief Daryl Roberts and our amazing HPS Security Team.
<NEW> Capital Preparatory Magnet School Calendar Transition
Capital Preparatory Magnet School’s extended year model was originally designed to expand instructional time, accelerate student achievement, and provide consistent access to academic and social-emotional support. This model has contributed to strong outcomes over time, including 100 percent college acceptance, expanded access to postsecondary opportunities, and the development of a college preparatory program grounded in social justice. At the same time, the conditions required to sustain this model have shifted. In the current educational and operational landscape, the extended year structure is creating increasing challenges that impact the long-term sustainability and effectiveness of the program.
Based upon feedback from the school’s community and stakeholders, and in consideration of the school's broader needs, Capital Preparatory Magnet School will move forward with transitioning to the Hartford Public Schools Academic Calendar beginning with the first day of school on August 25, 2026.

Desde gestionar las necesidades diarias de salud hasta responder a emergencias inesperadas, nuestras enfermeras prestan un servicio como verdaderas anclas de nuestras comunidades escolares.
<NUEVO> Feria STEM de las Escuelas Públicas de Hartford 2026: Celebrando la ciencia, la ingeniería y la innovación en nuestras escuelas
Esta mañana, con gran orgullo ofrecí las palabras de apertura de la Feria Distrital Anual STEM de las Escuelas Públicas de Hartford en la Escuela Secundaria Bulkeley. El tema de este año fue «Las HPS son fenomenales: Somos fenomenales/Yo soy fenomenal», una celebración de la increíble ciencia presente en nuestras vidas diarias. Desde los grandes momentos hasta las pequeñas maravillas, queremos que nuestros estudiantes exploren qué hace que sus experiencias sean «fenomenales» al convertir las observaciones del mundo real en preguntas, investigaciones y soluciones.
Más de 370 talentosos estudiantes de 3.er a 12.° grado, de 23 escuelas, asistieron a la feria para explorar la creatividad y la innovación en una amplia gama de proyectos STEM. La Feria Distrital STEM celebra la curiosidad, creatividad y resolución de problemas de los estudiantes en ciencias, tecnología, ingeniería y matemáticas. Los estudiantes investigan los fenómenos, elaboran explicaciones, desarrollan soluciones y comparten su aprendizaje con la comunidad. Los estudiantes exploraron los proyectos y (actividades) interactivas de escuelas de todo nuestro distrito, participaron en una demostración científica con el Museo de los Niños, exploraron carreras en los campos de STEM a través de nuestras rutas académicas de secundaria y aliados industriales, escucharon a conferencistas del sector STEM y visitaron nuestra exhibición de deportes electrónicos. Los alumnos de secundaria en los stands de nuestro Programa de Trayectorias académicas demostraron su entusiasmo por las distintas ramas de STEM que ofrecemos en el distrito.
Gracias a nuestros increíbles aliados, jueces y asistentes por su apoyo. ¡Un gran reconocimiento a nuestro equipo de Plan de Estudios de STEM y a los docentes de ciencias y matemáticas por inspirar el amor por las áreas STEM en nuestros estudiantes!
<NUEVO> Tercer Festival Anual de Orquestas de Cuerdas de las Escuelas Públicas de Hartford
Me sentí muy orgulloso de dar a todos la bienvenida a nuestro Tercer Festival Anual de Orquestas de Cuerdas de las Escuelas Públicas de Hartford, esta mañana en el auditorio del Campus de la Escuela Intermedia Martin Luther King Jr. 120 estudiantes de instrumentos de cuerda de cuatro escuelas, la Escuela Técnico Artística Noah Webster MicroSociety, la Academia Técnico/Artística Trinity College de Hartford, la Academia Renzulli y la Academia Great Path se presentaron en dos grupos, una agrupación de la escuela secundaria y una orquesta de las escuelas intermedias. Todos los estudiantes se juntaron al finalizar para ejecutar dos selecciones como parte de un gran final. El presentador invitado Stephen Wood ha presentado los tres festivales de orquestas de cuerda.

<NUEVO> ¡Nuestro Auxiliar Pedagógico de 2027 del Año y FCSSP del año!
Me entusiasma anunciar que Daniela Figueroa de la Escuela Técnico/Artística LaFontaine Classical recibió el título de Auxiliar Pedagógica del Año 2027 de las Escuelas Públicas de Hartford, y Jacqueline Avilés de la Academia Burns de Estudios Latinos ganó el premio de Proveedora de Servicios de Apoyo a la Familia y la Comunidad (FCSSP, por sus siglas en inglés) del Año 2026. El trabajo de nuestros socios, auxiliares pedagógicos y FCSSP (Proveedores de Servicios de Apoyo a la Familia y la Comunidad) tiene un propósito profundo para nuestros estudiantes: desde brindar cuidado antes y después de clases, hasta crear experiencias enriquecedoras durante el año escolar, el verano y más allá, conectando a las familias con recursos e información, y permitiendo una mayor participación en la educación de sus hijos. Sabemos que las experiencias y lecciones que estas apasionadas personas le ofrecen a nuestros estudiantes permanecerán con ellos a lo largo de sus vidas.
El premio al Auxiliar Pedagógico del Año rinde honores a un auxiliar pedagógico que haya demostrado habilidades y dedicación excepcionales al desempeñar su trabajo, ganándose así el respeto y la admiración de otros auxiliares pedagógicos, estudiantes, docentes, administradores, compañeros de trabajo y padres. ¡Deseo felicitar a la Sra. Figueroa por ser un ejemplo de excelencia para todos los educadores!

Nuestros proveedores de servicios de apoyo a la familia y la comunidad son responsables de múltiples talleres y eventos comunitarios con nuestros aliados cada año. Pero su trabajo no acaba cunado terminan los eventos. Todos los días, ellos están en la primera línea, realizando visitas a los hogares para generar confianza con nuestras familias, monitoreando diligentemente la asistencia estudiantil y proporcionando soporte esencial para nuestras PTO (Organizaciones de Padres y Docentes) y los Consejos de Gobierno Escolar. No solo trabajan en nuestras escuelas; sino que construyen los puentes que conectan nuestras aulas con nuestros vecindarios. ¡Una gran felicitación a la Sra. <NUEVO> Día de Caminar o Rodar a la Escuela
¡Me divertí mucho en el Día de Caminar o Rodar a la Escuela con toda la comunidad de la Escuela Museo Wish! El 6 de mayo, nos reunimos en el Centro Cristiano Liberty y nos desplazamos en bicicletas, monopatines y a pie hasta la Escuela Wish, con una escolta especial del Departamento de Policía de Hartford y oficiales de seguridad de las HPS.
El Día de Caminar o Rodar a la Escuela es un evento anual, global, que se celebró este año el 6 de mayo y fue respaldado en Connecticut por CT Safe Routes to School (Rutas seguras para la escuela en Connecticut) (SRTS), que anima a los estudiantes a caminar, montar bicicleta o usar otros tipos de trasporte activo no motorizado para ir a la escuela. Promueve los hábitos saludables, la seguridad y la comunidad; participan miles de escuelas a nivel nacional para crear conciencia de rutas más seguras para ir a la escuela. Gracias al Departamento de Transporte de CT, al Departamento de Policía de Hartford, al Jefe de las HPS Daryl Roberts y a nuestro increíble Equipo de Seguridad de las HPS.
<NUEVO> Transición del calendario de la Escuela Preparatoria Técnica/Artística Capital
El modelo de año extendido de la Escuela Preparatoria Técnica/Artística Capital se diseñó originalmente para ampliar el tiempo de instrucción académica, acelerar el logro estudiantil y brindar acceso constante al apoyo académico y socioemocional. Este modelo ha contribuido con resultados sólidos a lo largo del tiempo, incluso una aceptación universitaria del 100 por ciento, acceso ampliado a las oportunidades posteriores a la secundaria, y el desarrollo de un programa de preparación para la universidad basado en la justicia social. Al mismo tiempo, las condiciones requeridas para mantener este modelo han cambiado. En el escenario educativo y operativo actual, la estructura de año escolar extendido está creando crecientes desafíos que afectan la sostenibilidad a largo plazo y la eficacia del programa a largo plazo.
En base a las opiniones de la comunidad escolar y los interesados, y considerando las más amplias necesidades de la escuela, la Escuela Preparatoria Técnica/Artística Capital avanzará con la transición al Calendario Académico de las Escuelas Públicas de Hartford a partir del primer día de clases, el 25 de agosto de 2026.
<RECORDATORIO> El plazo para presentar la solicitud tardía para las escuelas Magnet Abierto
Grandes cosas están ocurriendo en las Escuelas Públicas de Hartford: nuestros estudiantes están siendo reconocidos por sus logros académicos y nuestros equipos deportivos están destacando. Como su Superintendente, continuaré compartiendo esta magnífica oportunidad, disponible únicamente para los estudiantes residentes de Hartford que asisten a las escuelas secundarias de las Escuelas Públicas de Hartford. El 100 % de nuestras 11 escuelas secundarias tienen estudiantes que calificaron para el programa Hartford Promise este año. Si vive en la ciudad de Hartford, asiste a una escuela pública de Hartford, obtiene un promedio general de calificaciones de 3.0 y tiene una tasa de asistencia del 93 %, su hijo/a tiene garantizada una beca de hasta $100,000 para la universidad de su elección.
